Hi all, I am a owner of an old (and I mean old and ropey) Mk2 Golf GTi (the 8v version) and I am having a few problems with her at the mo.
First up is the power steering, when I turn it full in either direction the steering judders (feel it through the wheel) and squeeks loudly (like a fan belt squeek). This also happens when I go to full lock.
Further more, when I drive it the steering doesn't feel right. NOw this is my first golf so I have no point of reference but I dont think it should be like this. It feels lighter steering to the left and heavier steering to the right.
Im hoping its not too serious (like just a belt change) as I dont wanna spend all that much on her at the moment.
If it is the belt then how do I change it and what tools do I need?
Thanks all!
-
As for the squeel and the lumpiness of the steering then yes your right it is just your belt. You can sometimes get away with tightening it but really its best to change it, after all they dont cost much. As for the change of feeling left and right im not sure. Best see what its like after you sort the belt out.
-
Good point. Its amazing the difference some air in the tyres can make! I always check that when i cant take roundabouts at 60
-
Motorway roundabouts of course
-
Ok cool, I was thinking that a belt change would be the first thing to start with.
Right, so how do you do it (is it easy) and what tools do I need?
I really wanna do this myself as I don't want to be forking out loads of cash to get a garage to do it.
Thanks
-
jack the car up and get underneath it. u'll see the power steerin pump. just slacken of the bolts till you can move it enough to release the belt. put the new belt on and tighten it all up
you may need to remove the pulley to get the belt off, thinking about it cause i think the alternator belt runs of the power steering pump.
-
Oh, that sounds much easier than I though!
So I wont need any particular tools (like a torque wrench) to tighten up the bolts to a particular strenght?
How much is a belt, im guessing I can just get one down Halfrauds?
-
get the belt from EuroCarParts or German Swedish French
nah you dont need a torque wrench for stuff like that. just a set of sockets/spanners and a bit of brut strength
-
Oh poo, I am off work at the mo and the nearest place to me is a Halfrauds is it going to be expensive?
There are a couple of other parts places that I could try, how much "should" it be?
There is a German Swedish place that a mate of mine at work uses to get parts for his Mk3 but I wont see him until next week when I get back to work and I kinda wanted to get this sorted this week as I am off.
Thanks for the fitting advise, im sure I can give it some elbow to get it off, do I just tighten it all up preaty tight and thats it (dont wanna over do it)!
-
just tighten the fixing bolts as much as you physically can
belt should only be a ?5, though make sure you get the correct one as there is a few different types. if your unsure then got to your VAG dealer and get one. take your chassis number with you
-
Well, I spoke to the garage who looked after the car and they said that it had been tighten to as far as they could so I am thinking that the belt just needs to be swapped.
You have got me worried about the different types now! I thought that would be the case 'cos I had a massive probelm getting a ruddy washer pump from Halfrauds and VAG dealer.
In the end my mate said try the German Swedish parts place and they knew straight away what it was and my mate picked it up later for me and brought it back into work.
If I try Halfrauds is there anything you can tell me that will help getting the correct belt?
(I know its a bit of a rubbish question, sorry about that)
-
just tell them its for a 8v GTI.
its mainly the diesels that have the different belts depending on their year
-
Ok, I have had a goosey on the CSF site and you can order online with the BUT I dont reckon it will be with me but saturday.
They have it listed as the following:
13412 POWER STEER.BELT-10x864 G2 1.8 8v F.Inj (+PAS) 8/83 >10/91 PAS Belt
That sound about right (there are a few there under diesels like you mentioned).
-
Common sense mate, once its tight dont force it till it snapps! I dont mean that nasty by the way.
-
I hear ya! (non taken)
-
Ok, got the belt today from Halfrauds (didn't cost much at all in the end).
Its the same width as the one thats already on there BUT it looks a bit small?
Should I be worried as its just a visual thing and it will fit on fine but snug, dont wanna be forcing it on?
I did check with the guy behind the parts desk and he said that he had looked it up under a Mk2 GTi (8v) and that was the correct one.
-
should b ok mate, i allways think they look small in ya hand
-
Or is that just what your lass tells you to make you feel better?
-
Changed mine about a month ago! do a search on here or in the engine section for my post, it's all there as i had problems!
Good luck
-
Cool, I will have a look. I did do a search when I first found this site but there is a lot to traul through and doing a exact search on this forum is a bit tricky as it brings back everything.
As I wanted to get out and get the part I thought it would be quicker to just post up a fresh topic.
Now I have got some time I am gonna have longer look
-
I think I have found the post you where talking about :
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=12861.10
But its left a bit in-conculsive as the last post you submitted gives the impression you where still at a bit of a loss with it?
I am only going to do the power steering belt tomorrow and I wouldn't mind just getting some sort of game plan in my head before I head out there.
I had a quick look at it yesterday and there are three bolts on the side of the p/s pump where the cog is that the belt sits on.
Do I just undo these and then it should slacken enough for me to get the old one off and then put the new one on and tighten it up.
Is that really it, it sounds all too simple?
-
Sorry mate, i thought I had completed it.
There is a hidden bolt you need to undo! if looking at the pump from the front it's on the right of the pump and is about 4" in so you can't really see it. get an extension on your socket and it should be ok, this will release the pump and it will swivel down if you have undone the others :)
Do not over tighnen this bolt when you put it back on!
O yeah, may aswell replace the alternator belt while your at it as this has to come off first to get the power steering belt off! (I think, don't qoute me) :)
Good luck

I have been out there today and the p/s pump was the bottom one and the belt went over three cogs.
SO after a lot of looking and thinking I dived in and unscrewed two bolts either side of the p/s pump and one just above one of them (o/s of the car).
I also unscrewed the tightening thingy (im guessing this is the tensioner as it looked like the part that is used to pull the pump back and therefore tighten the belt).
After all this the ruddy thing wouldn't budge, so I noticed there was another bolt I could see on on from inside the engine bay so I unscrewed that and took it out and also lossened the bolt of the arm thing that the pump is attached too (and looked like it would allow the pump to swing free backwards and forwards).
After this sucesses! The pump move freely backwards and forwards so I pushed it towards the engine (looking from undearneath the car) and got the old belt off).
Well, thats just sodding typical of fooking Halfords!! The belt I got from them is about 2 inchs too small and will never get on!!
So I am looking at the GSF online parts site and they have the following listed:
POWER STEER.BELT-10x864 G2 1.8 8v F.Inj (+PAS) 8/83 >10/91 PAS Belt
FAN/POW.STEER.BELT-10x735 G2 PAS Belt
Now I am guessing that the first one is the one to go for but can anyone confirm this for me please as I don't wanna fork out and try it all again without being sure its the corrcet on this time.
Thanks
-
id just buy both seeing as they are only about 2.50 each
or take your old belt to halfords and get them to replace the one you purchased with the correct item
-
Yeah I know, its just annoying after all that time working it out and struggling with rusty bolts and freezing my bum off today the sodding part is too small!
I even got the guy at Halfords to double check as I thought it looked too small and he asured me it was correct according to his parts list on the computer.
Is it easy to get the fan belt off too as I may go ahead and swap that when I next get under there as its behind the p/s belt.
-
Hi ya guys
i did a search to find this topic as i has just gained the exact same problem with my pas  but there is no conclusion to whether the belts rectified the problem. can anyone tell me if it did or not so i can get miine sorted
cheers
