The car is going into the garage next week for its 10k service.
While in I want them to look at the MDI as from day 1 my ipod has stuttered when changing between tracks (has been like that with the 6 or so ipods I have tried) and also the display sometimes doesn't change if I use my kids Nano ipods.
The problem is I bought the car with the RCD510 but upgraded to the RNS510.
If the garage check this I'm sure they will just blame the new unit.
I still have the RCD510 and it wouldn't be a problem sticking it back in as its literally a 5 minute job but I fear they will clear all the faults that will throw up as the car has been set up for Nav. I borrowed the VAG.COM so that would be a hassle!!
- Are they likely to blame the new unit if I leave it in or won't they even check?
- Would they clear all the faults if I temporarily put the RCD510 back in?
Cheers.

Hi p3asa and good morning.
I put the same question to my Warranty Manager one month ago and she was quite categorical that a change of unit should not be an issue with regards to routine service or other warranty issues. One does not relate to the other. Obviously they will not take up warranty issues with the RNS510.
They won't even check if there has been a unit change as it is not part of their routine.

... you can tell them that the battery was disconnected .... make up a reason - bodyshop, bulb change ..... this would produce error codes!
I had tons of these yesterday after the bodyshop disconnected the battery! Darren cleared them for me.
O, I've also got 'auto rainclosing' now!

Cheers.
The error codes aren't the problem really. I just don't want them clearing all the codes or putting it back to its original if I put the RCD510 back in as that means I'd need to go through the hassle of getting hold of another VAG.COM and getting the car recoded for putting the RNS510 back in
-
I bet if you don't change it back they will simply blaim the new unit and/or who ever fitted it. Or the new unit braking something.
If it was me i would change it back to OEM and reset everything that way they cannot blaim you and have to fix it.

Leave it in mate, I did when I took mine in for the same problem. They even updated the software on it to see if that fixed the problem

They won't even check to see if it's retro fitted, they won't be able to fix the problem though. Mines been in twice for it, they updated software on the RNS, updated software on the MDI and even swapped out the MDI unit but the problem still persists. They blame Apple

The vag-com lead is always here again when you need it.

They did not realise I had LED rears and my DRLs were not working in the auto mode (SteveP will have a solution soon). Don't worry. They are not looking to penalise you. Leave your RNS in.

Asker I got some suggestions off of Steve but at the time I was at yours I couldn't get on the net to see it,
If you see Steve he will sort your DRL's for you

What your forgetting is the MDI is connected to the headunit. If you fiddle with that part of the system ie headunit your warrenty goes out the window for that part of the car. I know alot of dealers who would say this.
They will probably check your car has had all the relivent updates for the audio system and oh look it did not come with that. caching..
The last thing i will say is do what you want, but i would be asking myself is it really worth the risk?

No probs. Happy with way things are for the present. I'll start fiddling after my hols. RNS sounds very good now!
You are a star for having looked after me so well. Very, very grateful and pleased. An extremely happy bunny old goat I am!

Thanks Steve for the kind offer I may very well take you up in that depending on what I do.
Aidy, when I was writing my post it was you I was thinking of and having no luck getting it fixed. Did VW actually admit to there being a problem? I know they won't sort it for me and to be honest I mostly use the SD card (now that i've found one that boots instantly) or the hard drive so its not so much of a hard ship but I'd rather VW were made aware of the problem. Plus I think the ipod is so easy to navigate to the song / album / artist or whatever you want.
I suppose if someone else had asked the same question I would probably have told them not to give the garage any excuses to refuse to look at it. Its hardly a big claim though so doubt they would even look at my cars spec on their system although I'd imagine the more switched on "tech" would question why there was no sharks fin!!
Its not till Wednesday so got a couple of days to think it through.
Cheers.

Hiya mate, I told them I'd retro'd the RNS. I told them I had the problem with the RCD and now the RNS, they didn't say anything about it and they updated the software. Of course they told me they had my stereo on all day and it didn't do it once, on my way home it did it again. That was the first visit, on my second they replaced the Media In unit in my armrest. All seemed fine for a day or 2 but then back to the problem, went in again and they said it was something todo with Apple and I should update my iPod and iPhone. I explained that all my software is up to date to which they replied that my idevices must be broken, they told me to keep an eye on it and take it back if it persisted. I've give up with it now, does seem like it's only Apple devices that make the problem but I could be wrong. The MDI updates seem to have fixed it a little bit, it's not as often now

Just to update this thread. I decided to just leave the RNS510 in and go for it. I took the RCD with me in the boot and was prepared to install it if they started to moan it was a head unit fault. However I didn't need it as they never even mentioned it. The mechanic called me to show him the problems and he was a bit surprised as these were the "top of the range head units" He said he would update the software, don't know if this was the RNS510 software or the MDI software.
Anyway it didn't work. Problems were still there. They did tell me that VW have acknowledged the problem and were currently working on it. So that was something at least.
Aidy, I edited a dozen songs to about 15 seconds long each so they didn't have to wait for each song to play in full. That way they could see the problems within a minute or so.
The iTouch still mutes / stutters between tracks, (especially noticeable if the next track starts loudly). Seems to be related to the display changing as this is when the volume mutes / stutters.
The Nano doesn't change display when the song changes especially if you fast forward a couple of songs.

p3asa: Told you not to worry.
But sorry to hear your problems are still unresolved. Hope they find a fix soon.
