My 8v is mostly standard save for a scorpion full stainless system. After going on my first trip on the Nordschleife last year in a borrowed 944 I want to make my golf track focused - on a budget. Its not my daily but has to be comfortable enough to drive to Germany in it.
Obviously upping the power isn't the way to go, probably on suspension + brakes and weight saving. So for a reasonable budget what should I do?

You could buy a mk3 16v, take the engine and everything else you need out of it, and try and sell the rest to make some money back, then put that money into adding any more power you can. I saw one on Autotrader a couple weeks ago for £350 for the whole car, only thing wrong with it (listed, anyway) was the clutch had gone

You're taking the p*ss to create an effective 'ring car for £500.
Re-bush it and replace the dampers, get it aligned.
Then replace the hubs and front brakes with a 280mm set up and the master cylinder with a 22mm unit to make it stop where needed.
That's your budget done.
Now take out everything you don't need.
Handling means a lot more than power on the Nordschleife.

Thanks. I don't really like the idea of an engine swap because you can get much bigger gains from brakes + suspension, and of course makes you a better driver.
What is the donor car for 280mm brake setup? Wouldn't new (lower) springs with new dampers be a good idea? If so - which ones? Budget is flexible but you get the idea - cheap.

You can go 5 stud off of a mk3 Golf GTI with 288mm discs. Either that, or mk2 G60 setup will give you 280mm discs. Or you can just get the carriers and calipers from a G60 and mk2 16v GTI hubs, its like Meccano, it all interchanges lol

another source for 280mm bits is the SEAT ibiza 2.0 16v models i.e. GTI or Cupra Sport, mid to late 90s.
