first of all hey everyone, new to the forum, defintly NOT new to dubs tho lol
anyway, my mk3 gti 8v is very sick!
when idling the gearbox/clutch makes like a cah cah cah like sound, like somethin is grinding (if that makes sense)
struggles to go into most gears, some times it does and somethimes it just does not at all
pops out of 3rd
makes a whine at speed
clutch slips
gets stuck in gear sometimes
makes some interesting noises in reverse
and the last one that i can think of, when you put it into 5th it is like it is in neutral
omg so much!!
also may or may not be related, but every now and then the steering goes really heavy when turning a corner, diff??

What a helpfull post

yeah i thought a new box would be the way.... ah well, any tips on removal and refitting??
-
and wgat one do i need??
-
If yr pretty competent, mechanics wise, and you got a mate that will help its reasonably straight forward, although very awkward!!
Any 020 box will fit, although the ratios are different on certain ones I believe. Best off trying to source one from an 8v gti really, theres a couple on the bay at the mo.
Starter motor off, clutch cable off, gear linkage off, bottom rear engine mount off, both drive shafts off, a handful of bolts holding the gearbox to the engine out, a bit of jiggery pokery and its out, reverse to put back in
You will need a special splined tool to remove the driveshafts, everything else is pretty standard tooling.
A garage will probably charge you around £150-£200 to swap it over
-
what splined tool would that be??
would a gearbox from a P reg, 1997, mk3 golf 1.9 TURBO DIESEL fit??
thanks for help! sam

Nope wrong ratios
-
ratios on a 8v GTi are 020 code DQF (or DFQ, I cant remember :P)
I didnt use any special tools when I did my driveshafts, maybe a torx bit cant really remmeber but it was nothing special had it all in my toolbox
-
cool, how long did it take you ?
would a mk2 8v gti box fit~??
-
mk2 gti box fits, but you need a different clutch kit if its an 8v box. 16v one is a direct fit, but 5th is quite short so you'll run out of revs when you get to 120mph and cruising on mway will be a bit more buzzy. the rest of the gears are tighter than the mk3 gti box as well.
trouble comes if you have a later mk3, as they use a different flywheel. if you get a mk2 8v box and you have a late mk3, you need to buy a late mk3 1.8 clutch kit. with the earlier mk3s you just buy mk2 8v clutch kit.
you can tell the difference by checkign the flywheel, the early flywheel has 2 locating dowel pins, the later ones have just the 1. also while on the subject of the dowel pins, make sure you line these up with the pressure plate properly, otherwise you'll damage the pp when you try to do up the bolts

The actual work on the box took about an hour maybe, its not too hard. Took about 5-6 hours overall though as we did it with the engine still the the car, and was a bit of a mission getting it in and out around all the other stuff thats in the way and some of the bolts are awkward to get to when theres engine in the way lol.
Mine is a later 97 mk3 so was just a simple unbolt old one bolt on new one. The gear selecter thing (technical term) needed to be adjusted as it wouldnt go into reverse after new box was fitted but thats just a 2 minuite job as well
-
cool, well mines a late mk3 ( 97 on a p reg ) but the clutch completely went today and the car is now very still so i spent yesterday getting my mk1 polo on the road ( good inspiration not having a car lol) i'll have to decide what i want to to do with the gti, my missus says she'll just buy me a mint one if really want, so i may be looking for a new home for mine ??
anyway, thanks for all your help, i'll have to see what the future brings!

Blimey, where'd u find her?? wish mine would buy me a mint one, i got no chance!!!

Taking 3 days to have another dig at me is slipping a bit.

you could get a new clutch kit for around £100 and if fitting a new gearbox it would be easy to do it at the same time, I got my 2nd hand box for £100 so your looking at around £200 to get it back on the road. well worth it imo if the rest of the car is in good nick :)
-
 ha ha i love it when posts get a bit gritty lol, no worries about your 16v dig, i don't care really i've had one, it was pretty cool, just struggling to find a cheap gti box, but i can find loads of other boxes, really cheap, such as mk2's and tdi gearboxes and 1.8 se gearboxes, but obviously with different gear ratios, i mean, i don't really want to go uber fast atm, but i don't want to balls up the driving experience lol
any comments are useful on my car, it's been kicked off the driveway and is on the road now, pfft
yeah, like i said it is a minter tbh, just need to sort the box out and re gas the air con, doesn't really seem like the best idea throwing it away,
oh and the rear passenger window just doesn't work lol

oh yes, finally done it!! i have found a 90,000 mile g/box just 50 miles away for £100 i am sooo chuffed!! mk3 back on the road soon :)

Whilst the new box is on the bench id replace the oil and the thrust bearing. Also, whilst the green end cap is off you can check the actuating finger for wear on the spline and the input shaft for play (there shouldnt be any!!) The thrust bearing and new end cap are about a tenner and a litre of decent box oil is about £14
