Title: New wheels on the way soon
Post by: MAW73 on 14 July 2010, 22:51
A wee bit premature, but I've finally got my winter set of wheels sorted out...... so I can ( hopefully ) keep my Monza II's in pristine condition.

I've brought a genuine set of mint scirocco interlagos 18"s with tyres that have only done 3K. I brought them off a guy on the scirrocco forum for £600 notes.

Maybe not to everyones taste but I think they will look fairly good on my GTI..... I've always liked the look of them on FrogGTI's car ever since I saw the pictures posted on here.

Ideally I would have liked a set of BBS black CH's but I couldn't afford those to be honest.

I will of course be posting photos in the near future....

I don't think I've seen a white golf on these wheels before.

The pictures will be good.

Congrats, best wheels ever  I bet you won't want to take them off come the spring. BTW, why do you need winter wheels/tyres in Sussex?

Found a nice pic of a MK6 on interlagos alloys...... Now I'm really looking forward to getting these wheels on my car next week

Hmmm .... not too sure if they suit the GTi .... have to see them in the flesh. Oh well, you've got half a 'rocco now.

A white standard golf has them not far from me.
They have also lowered the car and looks really smart.
I certainly think the wheels suit the car.
Title: Re: New wheels on the way soon
Post by: PenguinGTI on 17 July 2010, 08:10
I think they look smart on a standard mk6 but for me the GTI should be sitting on GTI wheels.

The GTI is the only car in the world to get Monza variant wheels... so I'm keeping mine on Monzas. Although I might consider going to 18 inches if I find a set of genuine wheels at the right price (I'm wary of replicas).

That having been said ETTO and the car in the pic you posted looks absolutely brilliant. Perfect for that colour also.

Your quite right mate, Monza's are the best on the GTI, however for me I just fancied a different set for a change/winter etc......

On the Rocco forum where I brought my wheels from there is another guy with a genuine set for sale with tyres (and I know he will take £600 for them)....

O please don't do that, that is the worst feature of the 'rocco.
I am sure they will look the business. For me, Monza Shadows or the wheels Neil or Es_Three have, though 19" will be too dangerous for town driving and my accident prone nature.
At £600 you got a bargain.

Yeh sometimes I look at the rocco's and I think, yeh smart, love them, wouldn't mind one...... then you go and look at it from the back and think..... no way I don't fancy that, its ugly.

Its a bit like some of my x's then

Well there here.... my interlagos alloys got delivered today

If I get a chance tomorrow I'll whip the monza shadows off and see what the new wheels look like.

I quickly offered them up to the car this evening and I'm fairly confident they will look pretty good. Already though I'm thinking they may look possibly even better in a charcoal / anthracite finish against a CW.

I shall take some pic's and post them on here for your valued comments..... god help me!!

Thanks guys, I'm really pleased with them. They look much better on than I expected. I'll try and get some better pics.

p.s. it was hard work getting those wheels on this morning.... I'm glad I went and brought a decent trolley jack first. I felt like I was work experience in Kwik-Fit

am1w - Its a shame you don't like them but please don't fret my dear... the monza's shadows are safely tucked away in the garage awaiting a nice polish and a few coats of wax.

My dear MAW73.

I am so happy to hear this. The Monza Shadows are probably the most beautiful and unusual of wheels. So what if most GTis are shod with them.

Sometimes, trying to be different is not always a good thing!

I'm not trying to be different, I just fancied a change and have always liked the rocco wheels and the look of FroGTI's car. The Monza shadows are great wheels but to think there the only wheel that will suit a GTI is a bit blinkered IMO. But each to there own and thats what this forum is all about. You might not like them but that your opinions and thats cool with me. So come on now lets have a little cyber man hug and get over this... you know you love the wheels really...

 + cyber hug with pleasure.

Honestly, I don't like the wheels in comparison to the Monza Shadows. As wheels go, they are nice, but that's that.

As they are, in silver, they would look better on darker coloured cars like Snoopy's or Froggy's.

On your white car, a definite no as there is too much bling - a white car + silver wheels with a million spokes! Yuck.
Even worse would be a white car with white wheels.

However, if these wheels were painted in anthracite or even black, the overall look would be quite fantastic on your white car and a worthy match for the Monza Shadows. Possibly even better. IMO.

Quick question: Do you have ACC on your totally specced car?
Title: Re: New wheels on the way soon
Post by: MAW73 on 25 July 2010, 09:09
No mate, no ACC. My car was x demo so it came with a good spec. Buying x demo saved a  good few £'s and the long delivery time on a new one (would definatley do that again next time).

Is it loaded or what? Wonderful spec. Smart buy.
The car will look the business with the anthracite wheels. Black would also look amazing, though these don't seem to be very photogenic.
How much do you think it will cost to 'anthracite' them? Can't wait for the pictures.

You're entitled to your opinion, but in my book the Monza Shadows are among the ugliest wheels ever designed.

After seeing thousands of alloys I keep coming back to the 18 inch Monza's I think it is a beautiful alloy really belonging to the GTI and you hardly see the modification crowd changing them therefore it can be called a succesfull design, in my book it is as good/comparable as the "Fuchs" on the Porsches...

I seriously thought about changing my monzas for something else at one time, but following loads of good comments from people regarding the looks I decided to stay with them.

I am so pleased I did as there is no other alloy out there which looks as good either at standstill or in movement.

I am sorry but I really don't like the interlagos on the GTI it makes it look like any old Golf, but heck ETTO.

If I do not like my alloys they GO no matter what the others say.....

This time it took me a few seconds to decide to have the optional 18 inch Monza instead of the 17 inch standard alloys (which I had for 4 years).
The standard alloys are okay but nowhere near the optional ones....(I think we call them Detroits)....with their black horse-shoes and black inner wheel they clean a lot easier as well......

You think they are easier to clean... try  black monzas ! That's the main reason I got them black (apart from looking cool) as it takes a quick wipe with a sponge and a spray of "black shine" and they look brill

(although I do have a soft spot for the Monza shadows. They are without doubt the nicest wheels I have ever seen on any make of car)
Title: Re: New wheels on the way soon
Post by: ErikGTI on 26 July 2010, 08:37
....now why do I not believe that....

Even with the Monza's it takes me about 5 minutes at least to clean each wheel....

I spray the alloy cleaner outside and inside the wheel to get the graphite to come loose after that I start to clean the inside wheel to get the black shining look back (to give it that wonderful 3D appearance back) after that I brush the red brake clean and the last part the outer wheel I clean each horse shoe to get it shining and last I do the shiny front. I use a thin sponge and a brush and lots of soft kitchen paper constantly applying water from the garden hose.

Sometimes I do a quick wipe in between but it will leave dull horse shoes and the brake is not nicely visible etc etc....that will not do on such a nice car....

To clean the standard wheels took me quite a bit longer....

Love the LED's but I'm not keen Lorinser alloys (which probably cost a small fortune).

That sentence..."you know it is okay to pump the b!tch"....reveals your character...it speaks for itself,  either you really want to provoke somebody to get an irritated reaction or....... you were never ever so right in your life....OMG I do hope it is the first assumption.....otherwise it is better for us to let go of all hope

It's not that I dont like those Roc alloys.... well ok I'm telling lies I really dont, its just they do nothing in the slightest for the GTI. It's like when you've just been to a nightclub and all the lookers are gone and all thats left is the ugly f**k*r still at the bar with her fat spotty pal. You know its ok to pump the b!tch as long as no-one finds out, but f**k me you wouldnt want to introduce her to your mates.

Kev:
You are sometimes wickedly spot on! But I don't quite understand why you need to pump a rubber doll that's full of holes?

I must admit those wheels look a bit odd on the GTi. Gives the car an old widowed woman look.

But once he gives them a bit of colour, I am sure they'll make his car look a bit younger and alive again! Anyway, they'll only be used in sh!tty conditions.

MAW is a smart man and has kept his Monza Shadows.

Unfortunately, the awful weather lasts longer than decent summer weather in the UK. So for most of the time his car will look sadly lacking in the beauty department with those magimix wonders!

I think they look good.

The Luganos look awesome too.

I don't see anything wrong with some modification. Not everyone is going to like what you do to the car but as long as you are happy with it, that is all that matters.

I have changed the wheels, lowered the car and sprayed the front splitter. I'm sure there are people out there that think I am mad. The LED rears seem to be accepted though

Well here's a couple of different wheel finish colours I could try on my interlagos winter alloys..... Obvioualy I've done these in photoshop and I'm by no means an expert in using this software. But it gives a bit of an idea how anthracite and black may look.

As now
(http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab242/WITHCOMBEM/NEW%20INTERLAGOS%20WHEELS/newwheels3.jpg)

Anthracite Finish
(http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab242/WITHCOMBEM/NEW%20INTERLAGOS%20WHEELS/newwheels3anthracite.jpg)

Black Finish
(http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab242/WITHCOMBEM/NEW%20INTERLAGOS%20WHEELS/newwheels3black.jpg)

Personally I like the silver alloys on a darker car like FroGTI carbon Gray GTI but I want to reduce the silver look on my CW GTI. Any thoughts?

p.s. Having run with the wheels on this week there growing on me. I know there not to every ones taste but I like them as a winter wheel anyway!

Yeh his got a set of AC Schnitzer (Type IV BiColour) alloys on his 3 series. His had all sorts of problems with them last winter with all the potholes. The outer rim lip of the alloy seems to deform really easily if you hit a pothole.

If you get a tank next you could stay with German manufacturer and get a Panzer. The Panzers are great when your in a hurry and if you take it abroad you will get across France in no time. The only downside is you would be going down the diesel route like the GTD's

Yes I'm into the beard painting (don't tell the Mrs). Already had my beard painted (by our Chipsaway friend Tony Daher) as it had a scuff mark and a couple of stone chips. In hindsight if I had know about the beard painting mod I would have got it painted in a different colour.

Def won't be a 'tiger in your tank' with derv! Sorry Steve30!

Saw a silver GTi with a beard. Prefer un-bearded. But that's my personal taste.

Just one more thing: Gloss black wheels could also look very fetching with a white car. In the flesh I think they would be the business. Very stealth-like.

Have you decided on winter rubber yet ?

I have Vredstein Wintrac 4 Extreme for my ML - very good tyre.

Get them now before the prices rise in winter.

http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Vredestein/Wintrac-4-Extreme.htm

I had never really noticed the side spoiler before as on my car it is roughly the same colour.

Really stands out on Candy White, not a good thing though, from some of those angles looks as like an afterthought.

Just IMHO

Hinge and Bracket are at it again. Too much time looking at 2D photos and not enough in the real world. Scirocco wheels look nothing like base model Golf wheels. They fill the arches much better than Monzas do due to their lower offset and also have a nice sporty contour in profile. Golf GTIs and Sciroccos have shared wheel styles since the 1970s.
As much as I love the Monzas which have their own heritage now, they are just as common on Non GTIs as they are on pukka GTIs due to the amount of people with GTIs who upgrade their wheels (again, something that's been hapening since the '70s), and flog them to Diesel owners, plus the numerous replicas which are sold all over ebay.
End of Sunday surmon. Amen.

P.S. What's up with the rear bumpers? It's an 8 page thread and I can't really take it all in.

Love is a many splendoured thing!
Look at Snoopy's pictures on Page 3 and mine on Pages 6 and 8.
Even worse in reality!

Your car looks so much nicer in the pics with the monzas.  With those other things on it looks like an ordinary Golf.  Sorry.

+1
They will all learn the error of their ways!
MAW is preparing for winter in adavance but unfortunately posts pictures of his car with 'those other things'.
Makes the car look like a granny machine!

That is it in a nutshell, you do have a way wwith words
Amen.

Thanks for sticking up for us Exonian..... I think its fair to say there’s only a small number of people who don't actually like them (those with a Monza fetish). Without seeing them in the flesh its a bit short sighted to be to critical imo. I'm my cars worst critic and would happily admit that they are not the best wheels in the world, but they do look pretty good.

p.s. I'm glad my wheels have caused so much debate and thanks for all the good + bad comments. I'll post some more pictures in the future just to upset the interlagos haters..!!

All the best guys MAW73

Hi MAW. I don't hate the Interlagos wheels at all. On a 'rocco with 19" size they look quite stunning. I see them everyday on that car. However, I personally feel they don't quite suit the GTi as much as the Shadows. You've got both so have covered all bases! Just show us pictures in your signature of the car with the Shadows too. Fair enough?
