Title: How to protect my baby from scums and villains?
Post by: jonnygo on 14 July 2010, 16:24
This is my first GTI ever although I have had previous Golfs and enjoyed them all.

I love my new Golf GTI to bits but worry about its safety, especially as its parked on a busy road and groups of youths constantly brush by armed with pick axe handles and whatever weaponery the kids of today use.

My other bug bear is people who needlessly open their car doors on to mine in car parks.  Why do they do this?  Do they not realise that another car door easily puts marks/dents in a door?

Recently I had a woman park her car so close to my front bumper I was unable to move.  "Just shunt mine forward,"  she said smiling, "thats what bumpers are for!"

"Yes!  When you're driving a F****g Dodgem at the Fair!" I thought peturbed at the notion that more people could think like this.

Does anyone have any tips to avoid the villaneous, the irrational, the mindless, the irrisponsible and the plain careless?

Has anyone successfully tried electrification?

Park in the parking space that lazy people don't park in as they have to walk and extra 100 yards.

Indeed I find myself driving round the periphary of car parks to find a spot where harm cannot be done!

Put it in a garage overnight if you can.

Tuck the mirrors in.

Park under a street light or opposite a building with CCTV.

As the other posters have said, park at the far end of the supermarket car park, or on the end of the line where there is more space.

Prepare for the worst every morning, there are some jealous toe rags out there I am afraid.

When I'm out: if I am feeling particularly antisocial (which, if I'm honest, is most of the time :embarassed:) I take up 2 parking spaces to avoid dings.

When I'm at home: if I couldn't park my GTI in a nice dry garage, I would never have got one in the first place.

well yes a garage would be right but unfortunately a garage is a luxury for anyone living in London like me

The best I can hope for is maybe a drive with my next home

I know its a risk but I couldn't put off buying a GTI!

We lavish so much care and attention on our GTis. That's great. But one fine day you could prang it (as I did) or someone will else will do you.  Life is a b!tch!

If you haven't got a garage it's a problem, I am paranoid about getting my car dented or scratched either deliberately or accidentally. Fortunately I have a garage at home, so my main areas of concern are work and the supermarket. Some good tips have already been given by others, when at the supermarket use the spaces furthest away from the entrance as most people are too lazy to walk more than 50 yards. Park near another expensive car if possible, not an old banger. Don't park near a trolley bay.
If I go anywhere I absolutely hate leaving the car in an on-road parking space or in any car park 'cos you never know who's going to get next to you after you've left the car. A lot of my paranoia has surfaced since the loan car my dealer gave me whilst I was waiting for my GTI got "keyed" when parked near my mums house [A wavy scratch about 1 metre long through to the undercoat]
Fortunately nothing came of it and it didn't cost me anything, but if that happened to my new GTI I would be inconsolable.

I ended up buying another car for a few £££ that I can now safely take to the football and the wife takes to do the shopping instead of her own car. Plus I get to do as much practice with a forthcoming rotary polisher, without any worry

I've found it doesn't matter where you park, people just park hard against me. I've seen me parking in the furthest away space in the car park yet when I come out, some plonker is right next to me. Even if I am in an end space and park as hard to the side as possible, some idiot will have parked half over my line and into my space!!!!   Its a joke.

What we should really do is organise a forum shopping meet. That way we can all park next to each other and not have to worry about numpties/

I've parked in a supermarket car park with at least 10 spaces either side.

10 minutes later the dreaded people carrier parked 10 inches away.  There is no hiding from them.

I had mine keyed when it was a couple of months old - I nearly cried (maybe I did).

Sorted now and it's only money.

have you seen the link on the thread entitled "Flimsy Golf" where someone threw paint stripper on every panel of this dudes Mini Cooper S?

Truly some sick puppies out there

Its unlikely I can afford a garage living in London but will have to look at a little driveway on my next house! (and maybe a CCTV camera)

Costco has car friendly spaces.
Maybe we need a database of such like parking

Never a truer word was said in jest!
My parking worries start again tomorrow when I collect my repaired car. It's quite stressful protecting it from those mindless, careless people. I really go through a song and dance to park carefully and safely.

Get a GSM phone dialer, you can get them from ~£100 for when the alarm goes off theres many out there. Meens it phones you when the alarm is triggered.

Door side trims are an option from your dealer

Thats really clever.

By the way , how come you have an R32 exhaust  system with a MK 5 2.0 TDI?

That's a Mk6.
If I remember correctly they were spy shots of the new golf not long after the MK6 was released, hence the speculation that an R of some description was also being worked on.

^ what he said  Its not my car but only one of two cars i have photos of with the side trims on. That one was on my photobucket account from ages ago so ment i did not have to load a new one up.

You are right about side trims but I feel they spoil the lines of the car.

My last MK5 GT TDI had them and they were cleverly the same metallic paint as the rest of the car so less conspicous, however all the top end cars e.g. Porsche would never have them

Sigh.  I loved the black plastic side trims on the Peugeot.  Never a scratch, even when someone opened a door on me. The black was smart against the gold car, matching the window seals and the mudflaps.  Such a nice change from getting the Fiesta chipped all the time.

The side of the Golf even looks bare without them.  Except, what's the point having them painted like the car?  They'll just chip anyway.

Rolfe.
