I see SteveP has the auto tailgate mod on his golf.
Is this easy to do? Are there different rams required?
-
I remember reading a while back about this mod about issue's with the struts rubbing against the bodywork and leaving marks.
-
That doesn't sound too good! I tried searching for it but couldn't find anything
-
Have a read of this.

Any chance of some more details or ideally a guide how to?
thanks alot
I'm going to have a little look tomorrow based on this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3rINjv5aKw&NR=1
I don't fancy forking out for new parts so going to see if a tweak of the original parts works

Right I had a look this morning. The system operates with 2 parts: a strut and a mounting plate. It is easy to remove both parts so if anyone wants to do it it should be a fairly successful effort.
Simply turning around the OEM plates with the OEM struts is not enough to achieve the result I desired. You have to lift the tailgate yourself a couple of inches and then the struts take over and it continues itself. It is easier, but not easy enough
I would also add that it makes the tailgate harder to shut. For this reason I consider turning the mounting plates to not be that efficient.
I am now going to order the skoda parts. The part number is 6YO 827 550 C for those that are interested. You have to order them from a Skoda parts department. VW didn't have a clue when I phoned them . Anyway the struts are £16 each roughly so the total cost of the mod should be about £32.
I'm going for it. Parts should be in on saturday morning
Hope that helps

I have reverted mine back to standard as after a while it starts to push the bootlid out when closed, so you get a gap around the sides when closed. It also means the bootlid does open as much so I kept hitting my head on the lid
I also found still (even with the skoda struts) when the weather is a little cold it won't open on it's own. I had no rubbing issues on the side of the paintwork.
If anyone wants the skoda struts to try drop me a PM as you can have them for £15 posted
-
I think I will leave it after hearing your stories.
Thanks for saving me the hassle!
-
Steve, what do you mean by it starts pushing out after a while? Do you mean the whole tailgate has a gap, or just at the top, or just at the bottom?
Also how long is a while?
PS. wish you had offered the struts yesterday before I went and ordered them from Skoda
Ah well,
-
Ok I am a little confused now.
I've been out to look at the car. I understand the principle that the skoda struts have more "push" but I don't understand how this pushes the tailgate away from the car. The angle difference created by rotating the fixing plate doesn't seem sufficient?
Thankfully though I am not getting any rubbing. The only remaining niggle is that the boot doesn't open as high but if I can't find a way around that then I can live with it. My missus uses the boot more than me and she petite.
I could use a little guidance Steve.
-
After around a month I found the gap (as you look side on) was getting bigger. As the struts are pushing the lid all the time I think the lock mech was slowly letting go.
This was also reported on a similar mod on the Mk5.

Alrighty, just ordered the scirocco stoppers so when they arrive on tuesday I'll have a fiddle around and see what can be done. :)

Don't stand too close to the tailgate when you auto open it. Nearly had my head knocked off with this feature on our Mercedes! Mercifully, I had the presence of mind to move my stiff neck.

Right guys thought I would finish this thread off.
I have installed the Skoda struts and the Scirocco spring loaded stoppers.
There are 3 variables in the process. The first is the positioning of the plates. The second is the struts and the 3rd (optional) is the stoppers.
Here is an easy way to understand the results:
OEM positioning and OEM struts and OEM stoppers - no auto tailgate
swapped positioning + OEM struts + OEM stoppers - no auto tailgate
swapped positioning + Skoda struts + OEM stoppers - sometimes auto tailgate
swapped positioning + Skoda struts + spring stoppers - full auto tailgate.
I am going to try tomorrow the swapped struts and stoppers with the plates in the original position.
Thanks to Steve I am wary of the tailgate moving so I have measured all the gaps and am ready to spot and movement.
The tailgate is harder to shut, perhaps to the extent that the mod is worthwhile. For me though I love the auto tailgate function -especially coming out ASDA etc - so I am keeping it.
Hope this helps,
Ali

Thanks for that. Maybe it could be moved to the maintenance and info section as a "How To"?
-
not sure how to do it so :embarassed:
although it does only apply to mk6 models :undecided:
-
just ordered the scirocco stoppers
What is the purpose of these different stoppers? Or what is the problem with the OEM's?
Do you have a part number?

Think it needs to be a mod.
Its ok that it only applies to the MK6 as we have our very own maintenance and info section

When you say its a bit harder to close the boot - how difficult is it?!
I like the idea of it opening itself when I come back to the car with shopping or golf clubs etc... but I wouldn't want to do it if it made the boot difficult to shut!
-
I remember hiring a car in the states with an auto tailgate,.
I must have pressed the button when I was out of sight as when I returned to the car the boot was lying wide open

Depends how strong one is. It is heavy enough to shut as it is IMO. Besides, one might get decapitated if one is close enough!
Besides, sometimes, you don't want to open it all the way just to throw something in!
-
It is hard enough that you can no longer close it by pulling the inside handle down. Successful closure requires hands on the paintwork side of the tailgate.
The scirocco stoppers are there just to give an extra little push when the tailgate is starting off. sometimes in certain weather the struts aren't enough so the spring loaded stoppers are the helping hand.
They do require modification though.
-
OK... if I have to put my hands on the paint to close, then I've decided against it!
Thats just a recipe for disaster when people rub their hands on the back of the dirty car trying to slam it shut!

I would not let anyone touch my backside and definitely not Wolfgang's either!

Another Volkswagen Golf Automatic Hatch Opening (http://www.my-gti.com/180/volkswagen-golf-automatic-hatch-opening) from Australia. It has a link to There is a new way by using Scirocco bumbers (http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=108927) with part numbers.

Scirocco spring loaded stoppers - V1K8 827 761 C
Although I found these didn't fit satisfactorily so I modified them.
Now the tailgate is an absolute dream
