Hi all finally got my system into my MK3 2.0 8v GTI. Will post up some pictures soon but heres what has gone in
Alpine 7874r - With Ipod Interface (£150) + (£75)
Alpine 4" 180w Speakers in the Dash (£40)
MB Quart 6.5" reference componants in the front doors (Woofer + Tweater) (£150)
MB Quart 6.5" reference componants in the rear doors (Woofer + Tweeter) (£150)
Alpine 6x9's on the rear Shelf (£50)
2 Memphis audio competition Subs 500w rms each (£1000 for the pair)
1x Memphis sound processor (£350)
1x Memphis Belle Amp 4x 75w and 1x 1000w RMS (£1200)
Overall spent just over £3000 and it sounds awesome and i mean awesome. The bass from the system is earth shattering, just got to love a wicked audio system.
Mounted the amp and sound processor under the rear seats, nice and tidy and very stealth.

Why did you go for 6x9's if you have rear speakers and a sub?
-
I did it for acoustic reasons. The alpine 6x9's are much better mid and top end, Alpine not really known for bass, and as the rear door speakers are very low in the mk3 you lose a bit of the acoustic sound. The 6x9's just add a little more to the top end, making sure all the frequencies are covered. I just sat in the middle of the car and felt it was lacking a bit, so added them and i was impressed with the extra it gave, so left them in.
-
Who did this system for you? If you paid a company todo it, you got taken for a ride.
You spent £1200 on an amp and then £150 on a pair of speakers? WHat were you thinking.
What you mean "cover all frequencies"? What complete nonsense. You dont need 6x9's and imo you've spent a sh!t load of cash for crap.
£1000 on front components
£1000 on amps
£1000 on subs
Rip out the sound processor, all the speakers and start again.

Smoove, Thanks for your constructive feedback, very useful, spose everybody is entitled to an opinion though , but beleive me its not a load of crap. I did not get ripped off and i have not been taken for a ride. The audio system i have built is exactly what i want, and i am extremely pleased with it. I dont know if you know anything about audio systems or not, maybe we might meet one day and you can have a listen then you could have an opinion which is factual and therefore credible.
As far as covering all the frequencies, i suppose i really mean that when i sit in the car i want to hear every little detail, thats why i did it the way i did it. I have been fitting systems in cars for nearly 18 years so definately know what im doing.
Like i said i will post up some pictures soon for those that are interested.

I'm not saying it wont sound good, all im saying is you could have used the cash far better and had alot more sound out of it.
If you've been installing car audio for 18 years, i doubt you would have paid £1200 for an amp and then popped in some cheap alpine fronts and then spent another £50 on some 6x9s "to hear all the frequencies". You should have spent more on the fronts, so wouldnt have to bother with 6x9.s
-
How did you fit 4" speakers in the dash?
-
Screwdriver?
-
Is it just me, or am i not talking common sense?
-
Smoove, I agree with you.
Undoubtedly the system is going to be loud, but in terms of outright quality less kit of a higher quality would have been the way to go.
As the OP says, none of us have heard it, so no one but him can comment with any authority, but if my experience has taught me anything 6x9's rarely win SQ competitions.
Again, I have to stress, I haven't heard the system, but for me a set of components and and set of 6X9's, some of which would be powered by the amplifier, would be far to rear-heavy and bright for my tastes.
For me, I would have rather ditched all the rear speakers and had a set of top end Focal speakers up front, maybe with some horns for the top end stuff and a very high end source unit. If rear fill was a do-or-die necessity then I would have had a small set of rainbow, DLS or similarly high end co-axials.

HI guys, thanks for the comments
Just to clarify
Im not intending to enter any competitions and i just dont have Alpine 6x9's and Alpine 4" speakers in the dash, as said I do have 2 sets of MB Quart reference speakers in the doors, if you know about systems then you will know MB quart and the quality they are. As far as the speakers in the dash, there was a hole there that needed filling and as those only run of the stereo i did not need amazingly powerful speakers, but they do add to the sound. As far as the 6x9's like i said the componants in the rear doors for me dont generate enough sound to make it feel completely balanced in the car as the speakers sit so low (below the seat line), i like the sound to feel like it is coming from all around. Obviously if you sit in the back it sounds great, but i dont drive in the back. Thats why i added the 6x9's in the shelf just to project the sound more forward. I think its a case of you have to hear it to understand what i mean.
I agree the alpine fronts are not the best quality, but like i said the MB quart speakers are. and thats what the amp powers. Along with the subs.
Honestly on 2/3rd volume you cannot sit in it for that long, there is no way i can get it any louder without it being unbareable.
If you have not heard of MB Quart then check out the link, http://www.mbquart.com/main_caraudio.html

Got to say, its a great discussion though.

correct me if im rong but wont the subs cancel out the 6x9's as they are in the boot ? or are your subs somewhere else? and as you say you have 2 subs in there there will be evan more air being moved and mean it is going to upset the 6x9's but do corect me if im rong just that is how i understand it
-
I think you have followed the most important rule - you have got it sounding the way YOU want it to sound.
I am curious with so much rear-fill though. I have always had better results balancing out the sounds so that the front speakers and the sub do most of the work.
Is the soundstage dragged back with the extra rear fill?

Honestly it sounds well balanced, which is what i like, im going to Volksfest tomorrow at north weald, so if anybody going come and have a listen... if you find me lol

That is the most unjustifiable sound system I have EVER seen. £3000 and the subs are loose, the amp wiring is not the best and the headunit is awful. How can you seriously say you have MB Quart up front for quality and crap £50 6x9s at the back to enhance frequency response when you have 2 1000w subs underneath them???? I'm not saying it doesn't sound good, I'm not saying the bass isn't earth shattering BUT JESUS! I could have spend half that and made a system that A. looked good and B. sounded much better. But meh, that's just my opinion.
-
Easy boys.
I wouldn't of chosen that route either (In fact the kit I've got is worth around £4,000 and in my opinion will sound awesome) but without the right installation will sound sh!t.
If he's happy with it then fair play.
I will say though your system is only as good as your weakest part. Speakers in the back drag the soundstage to the rear. That's like going to a concert and turning around with your back to the stage. Music should come fro the front.
Try unplugging the rears for a week to compare the sound.
Also what size box are the subs in? Ported or sealed?
-
Just had a look at the pics again.
With the tweeters that low your dragging the sound down. What I did/will be doing again is temporarily mounting the tweeters on a pillars and repositioning them to get the best sound.
Subs wise. Try building or getting a box built. Around 5.5cu ft before displacements tune it to the mid 30s will see you gain loads of output and still keep it musical. This obviously depends on your music taste of course.
