Title: k04 upgrade
Post by: mk2bal on 13 July 2010, 19:59
a mates got an aum (k03s he thinks) 20vt mk2. hes upgrading to a k04 turbo. he knows he needs a new downpipe, will see qpeng for a k04 one, but what about the manifold? it looks the same, (3 bolts attaching the turbo) but wants to know 1st before he buys/unnecessarily buys 1. also what about oil feeds etc? any help appreciated..

new manifold, oil/coolant lines, downpipe (as you said), turbo of course, TIP if you have one or adjustment to boost piping, etc, injectors and remap. I'm sure I missed something though...

If he has got a k03s i wouldn't bother wasting time on a k04, get a hybrid k03s from jbs or if he hasnt already get a atb diff.

Yer too much effort putting a k04 onto the a k03 engine, loads of things to change around.

he wants to get his k03/k03s (doesn't matter) hybridised, Loads of seat boys do this mod, when i priced it up from badger bill it would cost about £2.5k, would be quite a bit less if he done the work himself, Mods needed are injectors, 4 bar fpr  and k04 maf housing, oh and stage 3 remap, the turbo and stage 3 would cost about £1300 alone. and get his turbo hybrid from the likes of cr turbos, they cost about £600, rather than paying jbs A stupid amount for one.

Too make it work best aswell hed be best off having if not got it any is a silicone tip and a 3" turbo back fmic all the normal upgraded stuff.

go on seatcupra.net too find out loads more info on it. will get you too about 280bhp mark, guy with a seat is running water/meth injection and got rr @ 298bhp.

But of course how is he going to put down 280bhp at the front wheels?

emery- its running qpeng (map not maf). so maf sensor aint an issue.. if its 600+ for a hybrid k03 why not spend 350 on a k04 and have   a bigger turbo?! getting the power down aint a problem, its got an lsd and he knows how to drive... cheers guys though, its confirmed he needs a new fanimold before he trys it n fails!

He'll need a maf housing large enough to cope with the airflow, s3/tt one will work.

yer he can get a k04 if he wants, the throttle bodies on the other side and loads of things are wrong, if it was so simple why dont every k03 owner put a k04 on instead of a k03s and k03 hybrid?

K03 hyrbid is his turbo taken out, sent to cr turbos or others alike and k04 internals are put in then it goes STRAIGHT back on. Only upgrades are needed not different pipework etc no new manifold.

K03 hybrid is a straight swap. k04 needs work.

its not got a maf sensor, its on qpeng (MAP), meaning it can 3d map upto 3 bar of boost. there is no n75 valve, no maf sensor, no vvt etc.. anyone got a 20vt mk2 on here thats done this conversion themself?

oh right ok, was getting muddled up. does he not understand what a k03 hybrid is? 280bhp, more power than a stage two k04? added water/meth injection taken it near 300bhp?

Or http://www.backdraftmotorsport.com/shop-vag-1.8t/1.8t-k04-1-turbo/flypage.tpl.html
k04 straight swap from k03. ask it on the mk4 section therell tell you whats easiest k03Hybrid or k04

its 230 bhp at the mo on the ko3, and the k04 is quite a bit bigger, im sure with a bigger downpipe etc and more boost itll make 280+. just like when you chip a ko4 s3 from 225 - 275, plus front mount, exhaust, filter etc surely itll make that at least?

Yer it is a bigger turbo but the k03 hybrid will have the k04 turbos in it. a stage one remapped s3 ( real world from airflow readings) is around 250bhp but stage two could prob get 15-20bhp more than that, a k03 hybrid wont be alot more, but it should be a little bit more as said many of them gets around 280bhp, the cheaper k04 turbo will quickly be used to buy new stuff, not 100% on what has to be changed but definately the manifold will and other things, search around on seat cupra net too see if any of them have done a k04 swap. youll need stage two stuff to go hybrid, Turbo back exhaust, silicone tip fmic.

what has he got on atm? Guessing hes got stage two gear already having 230bhp? If not hell need that then a few things from an s3 or alike then the turbo and remap and thats it. It is quite expensive going for more than a k03s though!

Has he got a turbo back exhaust 3" and other stage two stuff?

its a 20vt aum engine in a mk2, ko3s turbo, with qpeng management. its got 2.5" jamex full system, qpeng downpipe, sprinter intercooler, green cotton filter. 0.5 bar low boost (180bhp), 1.5 bar high boost (230bhp). 60mm alloy and silicone boost pipes.
