Air bag fault

589 is passenger side airbag, usually it's just a case of the plug contacts under the seat need cleaning up
-
cheers mate i will give it a try in a bit

Observe correct battery dis-connect sequence etc, if you are unplugging/plugging it back in. Don't want it going DOOF in your ear-hole!
-
Right so i need to unplug the battery then unplug the seat (is it just the big orange one or is there more then that?) then plug the battery back in?
-
Been to a specialist today and he thinks its my passenger airbag that needs replacing which is gonna cost near on £1000 does this sound right or not do they often just need replacing for no reason?
-
Did you clean the sensor?
-
Urm sounds like he's taking the wee wee
I have this fault code; quick jiggle of the wire under the seat and reset it via VAGCOM and it stays off for ages
But trying cleaning the plug as what has been suggested
Worse case is the loom under the seat needs replacing - about £25 from the dealers
-
Is it the orange one under the seat yeh?

Mine was yellow but if there's only one plug then that should be it
-
just been out there its yellow and pink just pulled the plug out gave it a clean then reset it but its still coming back on so what now??

I'd pop to your local dealer and order a replacement loom. At this stage its far cheaper than forking out for a new airbag!

would you no how difficult it is to fit. the mechanic i saw today said he was going to pull the glovebox out and check the wiring to the front passenger airbag would this have anything to do with it or not?

Sorry ignore me. I thought it was the side airbag you were on about :embarassed:
Yeah the glovebox would have to be dropped out although if you pull the side panel from the dashboard you can see the wiring in there. Maybe a wiggle of that might help :undecided:
-
yeah that was my fault  N131 is glovebox bag, N199 and N200 are side impact bags that are effected by the under-seat plugs
-
cheers for the help i will just have to wait and see what happens when it goes in to him im just dreading having to pay out for a whole new airbag

I have the same code coming up:
00589 - Airbag Igniter - Passenger Side - [N131]
Short to Ground - Active/Static
I changed the airbag and hte module, code comes up. Could it be the wire or the plug?
-
Just a thought...you changed the airbag and the module and the code still comes up? Did you actually clear the code after the changeover was done? I've made that mistake and it looked like the problem was still there...cleared all the codes and everything returned to normal.
As I said...just a thought.
-
Yes, i have the Autel MD802 tool, I tried clearing it and it comes up after I do a ignition on test, then start the car test and turn off the car and turn to ignition on and it still comes up.
-
After the first airbag reinstall, the code cleared for a few minutes and it came back up. I checked the code after and it said it was sporadic short to ground. After checking it again, the code went back to active/static as previously when the code appeared. any thoughts?
-
That's pretty much what happened in my case...I went around and checked every connection (including earths) I could find, cleaning and spraying WD40 as I went, but that bloody light kept on bugging me! I have the same model Autel as you and it kept showing the code until something I read, on this forum or where ever...leave the drivers door open, keys in your pocket, disconnect battery, go and have a cuppa for an hour..come back...hook up the battery (must be fully charged)...connect the Autel and turn on the key (don't start yet)...read codes and clear whatever comes up...turn off key and unhook Autel. Wait 5 minutes and start the car. It worked for me and after nearly 8 months, has never happened again.
Not saying that it will work for you, but it's a free try.

Sounds good :)...i'll give it a go!
-
So I tried like you asked and no go. I did some continuity tests from the airbag harness to the airbag module pins. There are 5 pins that are responsive to the test. 4 of 5 pins are ok, no resistance but 1 pin, it stays at .37kohms if the multimeter is set at 60kohms. I wonder if I have a short or resistance acting like a short. Any thoughts?

Sorry to be long winded with a reply. I'm afraid that I'm easily bamboozled with the electrikery side of these things...I can usually find shorts or bad connections etc, but the nitty gritty of multimeters and readings are beyond me.
There are a couple of real experts on this forum and I'm a bit surprised that they haven't jumped in yet.
