Title: Mellow Yellows mk3 more door 8v gti *rx2 w.i.p.*
Post by: mellow yellow on 12 July 2010, 11:44
Time to start a thread me thinks....

Here is the car as i bought it from a kid down the road in Jan 2010.

After a good wash polish and wax thanks to the detailing section.

then BMW rear wiper, a couple of stickers and german pressed plated where added.

german plated now removed thanks to a man on a motorbike with a bright yellow jacket!  :lipsrsealed: £60.00 later new plates where ordered and fitted.
pic from the big fat tour:

then finally yesterday got my lows thanks to Khare for the good deal and to two mate for fitting. think its 60mm all round and is a firm but comfy ride.

managed to destroy the front mudguards as well as nearly rip my arch trim off thanks to a bit of rot  which also puts the de arching on hold for the forseeable.

just need to let it settle properly and get the tracking realligned then work out how much arch lip to cut away as i'm getting some rubbing on corners (probably due to the 205/55 on the wheels?)

I'm also in the middle of refurbing some bbs 15's from a vr6 (when i say in the middle i mean fighting to get them back to bare metal with nitromors!) may have to give in and get them blasted and power coated but i really wanted to achieve something for myself.

In the mean time any ideas for what colour to go with the wheels?

so future plans in no order..........
bbs wheels refurbed with 195/45 rubber
maybe de arched & de spoilered.
maybe vento front end??? the jury is still out on this one.
also been offered a twin 3" backbox but not sure on this as dont want it to sound too chavvy?
remove some parking dings.

opinions and comments very welcome

Thanks Kells!

yeah i'm in two minds about the vento front, i know its common in general in "the scene" but i rarely see one around here and want to stand out. I have had thoughts about debadged grill in black or red or black grill and black badge.  :undecided:
for the time being i'm thinking black slats and VW badge and tinted headlights.

thanks khare, went on with not much hassle, the threads on the top of the struts needed a bit of work but apart from that was spot on.  can't fault your service in any way. a pleasure to buy from!!!

As you can see from my sig i've gone for the debadged with black slats and smoked headlights, i've also got smoked fogs but need to update my pic!  *looks in Shady's direction*

Post by: mellow yellow on 17 July 2010, 20:17
got busy with the paint today and painted the slats and VW badge black. the finish isnt perfect and will have to be redone but it will do for now as it was just a rush job to see how it looked, so i think it will be staying.

Title: Re: Mellow Yellows mk3 more door 8v gti *BLACK SLATS BLACK BADGE*
Post by: mellow yellow on 05 August 2010, 15:41
need to get motivated so i thought i'd write a list of all the bits i eventually want to do and thoughts for possibles, so in no particular order:

get the BBS wheels shot blasted and powder coated gun metal grey and get them covered in 194/45's
Yellow calipers
vr6 front splitter (maybe? bit too common, might think of something different)
early vento front, not to everyones taste but i like them
trim and roll arches, fix/fill/weld any rust
maybe de arch, de spolier, de mudflap de wiper depending on above
summer wheels, thinking something oem+ but not done before, probably go 16's
replace wheels bearings, and bottom ball joints.
replace bushes all round
replace water pump
replace power steering belt
replace exhaust, probably backbox only, something sporty but subtle.
recaro interior
black pillars roof lining
new head unit
get components properly amped
sound deaden doors and under rear bench seat

i will probably add to this list as i go along coz my mind is always changing

heres a pic of how it stands now from bugjam

please let me have your thoughts and ideas
Title: Re: Mellow Yellows mk3 more door 8v gti *New inspiration*
Post by: mellow yellow on 08 April 2011, 09:16
...... right, i 4got all about this thread to be honest mainly due to losing interest in the car over winter and putting it up for sale.

But......... since the sun has come out i have found the love again and decided to keep it for a bit longer, basically because i have put a lot of money into it just to keep it on the road.

So following a trip to P B Customs i have some new plans, its still gonna be my daily, so sensible but tidy is the way i'm going ....
wash, wax etc and get rid of all the stickers and rear gti badge
black rear VW badge
6 months tax
good service to get her running spot on again
new abs sensors
Sort the rusty wings out
get rid of the arches and side skirt trims (bloody water traps)
trim and roll metal arches ready for new summer wheels, monty 2's or skoda fab vrs?
passat duckbill splitter
euro front wipers
joey and yellow main beam chambers and fogs indicators
bung in the rear wiper for now and smooth plinth
pull all parking dings out

also would like to but probably wont happen...
blowover in original colour to get it mint again.
recaro interior
early vento front
16in schmidt ml's
weld up rear wiper and de-spoiler
remove side repeaters and intall us side markers .......

lots of plans and little funds so it will be a slow process, gonna start with the essentials and the cheap and easy then move onto the bigger stuff when i have saved up some dollar. I just hope i don't lose interest again.  :undecided:

Finally pulled my finger out this weekend and got my head under the bonnet.

Managed to solve the cutting out and missfire problem by giving the throttle body a good clean out.

I was going to take some pics and do a little guide but it was that simple i didnt bother in the end, i just wished i done it sooner as she now runs like a dream again.

i managed to do it withut removing the whole throttle body as well, just removed the intake pipe and got busy with a cloth and some carb cleaner on the inside, got the mrs to open up the butterfly on the tb by putting her foot on the go go pedal and got inside done as well.

next up is a new beather hose as mine is a temp bodged kinked one, 6 months tax, new abs sensors and a diy mini service, wish me luck  ..................

despoilered
dewipered
removed golf gti badge front and back
black rear vw badge
removed mud guards
quick wash and dressed trim and tyres.

white wheels next on the list, either paint these or sort some 16's out?

let me know what you think

i must be insane???

there are a few issues with the car....

front wheel bearing is humming like a stale tramp
top mounts are knocking
rear tyres are catching spring cups
cold starts are not fun
lots of other little broken bits etc etc....

i decided to cut my losses and stick some for sale signs up for an optimistic price. and also put it on ebay with a £500 start price. However with about 10 mins to go on no bids on ebay i pulled the auction, i couldnt bare the thought of someone getting my pride and joy for £500 notes at the last minute, even if it does need some tlc!!!

the mrs wont be best pleased as i'm gonna have to fork out for the work doing now!?

although i may try and persuade her to get a diesel loop for herself which i can pinch for my commute to work when shes not using it???

so anyway i'm keeping my car and going to junk some more cash into it just to keep it on the road  i must be tapped!!!!

bad times mate! i dont know what it is about the car but i just can't get rid of it, its not fast, its not practical, its not exactly pleasing on the eye or cheap to run, i've spent its value more than 3 times over just keeping it on the road and i'm about to spend more on it again  :lipsrsealed:

it'll be worth it until the next thing goes wrong then i'll be cursing it again!
Title: Re: Mellow Yellows mk3 more door 8v gti *more trauma*
Post by: mellow yellow on 20 June 2011, 15:19
right!..... more mk3 related trauma!

went down to my mates body shop today to get it up in the air and to remove the arch trims to see how much rot is behind them.
the passenger rear is fubarred!, passenger front is ok, drivers front is fubarred and drivers rear is ok but will still need a repair.
we ground away the big bits of the rust and bonded the arch trims back on as a temp fix til i decide what i'm doing with the car.

when the front was off i had a good around to see where the noises are coming from, the top mounts look fine but the passenger side wheel has lots of movement, you can wiggle it around around quite freely!!!!! and i also found a nice bubble on the inside of the tyre so that is 3 new tyres i need now!!!
But on the plus side i tried the 195/45's on the rear and they clear the spring cups so i won't need any spacers on the rear now.

i was chatting with my mate and if i do most of the prep work. we're going to replace one front wing, get repair kits for the rears, weld up the wiper hole, maybe smooth the front bumper, repair all the dings and scratches and give her a full respray for just over a grand?? but this will be to a show standard so new wheels WILL be required as well.   i would be loosing the arch trims and skirts if i was to take this route as well.

pics...

blistered wheel...

worst of the rust...

its in the garage on thursday to be checked over so its future depends on the outcome if its just 3 tyres and a beariing/ball joint then i'll keep it and save some dollar for the bodywork. if its alot more than that then it will either be scrapped/broken and a banger bought whilst i save up for a replacement....

I think it's time to give in now mate. Go for that white 16v that you said you've been offered or at least check it over. The money you would have to spend to save that could go into the 16v and really make it look like something special!
Title: Re: Mellow Yellows mk3 more door 8v gti *More trauma* decision time!
Post by: mellow yellow on 20 June 2011, 16:14
true but the white one will need almost the same amount of body work doing, its still an option for sure but i just need to mull it over??? the thing is with my red one i know what is wrong with it and i also know what has been fixed and should not need fixing again?  i don't know the full history of the white one and engine wise could goose me right up, it will be a gamble, even if it costs more to keep the red one even though its a 5dr and only an 8v its still a safer option.  :undecided:

argh i dont know what to do...

might just cut my losses and break it and go for a boring polo tdi with coils and leave it at that!?

aw but i like the matt red

http://www.mattecars.com/2009/09/matte-red-porsche-carrera-gt.html

got a call from the garage today, it needs..
3 new tyres
2 wheel bearings
front lower arms

not too bad really, gonna price up the satin red as a diy job, got nothing to loose coz otherwise it'll just be broken. gonna get a sensible daily and keep this as a mess around, as its worth jack all to anyone else but its a sound runner so would be a shame to sell it for peanuts or to break it!

but at the same time i change my mind on a regular basis so who knows??

If you do DIY it then do make sure you cut back the orignal paint very well to give yourself a good key.
And will you strip the car and do the inside as well?

outside will be done properly, inside might not be done at all? it all just depends at the moment, it might just be getting broken

update

the car has been in the garage for the past week with a mashed wheel bearing and ball joint.

should hopefully be back today or tommorrw with the above fixed along with 3 new 195/45's that i dropped off this morning.

Then the for sale signs will be coming out, the wheels will be going white along with the badges and the grill slats back to red, then i will be enjoying it until next time it breaks

pics to come after the weekend...

car is back from the garage, 40 quid for sorting the play in the wheel, no wheel bearing needed, replaced ball joints and 3 new tyres fitted.

i've got the love back! running sweet and no scrubbing.

the grill is currently between coats of red, keeping the badges black for the moment....

looking forward to the Big Fat Tour and Leeds VW festival now!!

pointless update....

new tyres now 195/45 all round and grill now rattled red with black badge.

just need white wheels now and i'll be happy with the exterior for a bit....... other ideas are joey mod and tint lights and passat duckbill splitter????  and maybe cl, all reds or red black reds for the rear???

need to sort some mdf mounting plates for my front comps and get them amped up and maybe source the black interior bits, would also like a lupo wheel and mk4 knob for the cockpit.

white wheels for sure but i like them well tucked in  :lipsrsealed: maybe 10mm all round max?

red black red are rare as rocking horse poo, might look into diying.... but they would be my 1st choice

i dont know if tinted lights and fogs etc would work with the white wheels??? could always peel it off i guess?

white wheels for sure but i like them well tucked in  :lipsrsealed: maybe 10mm all round max?

red black red are rare as rocking horse poo, might look into diying.... but they would be my 1st choice

i dont know if tinted lights and fogs etc would work with the white wheels??? could always peel it off i guess?

I think tinted lights work with almost any car to be honest. when you said red black red for the rears I assumed you'd be DIYing it.

I'm the same as you don't want to go mad with spacing but I reckon i'll pop my rears out by 10mm as there's space for it.  Can't really do anything at the front unless I change wheels,.

yeah i prefer the down and in look to the down and out....

poke and stretch isnt my cup of tea, not on a daily beater anyway.

think i'll have a little dabble on photoshop. tints up front and red black red rears with white wheels.

had a spare few hours today so decided to joey mod my fronts. and replaced a couple of bulbs that i noticed had shone their last glimmer of light.

i'm not 100% happy with them so i will be redoing them and spraying the inside of the grey plastic casing black as well in the future...

wheels alloys with be diy'd white ready for harewood house aswell..... i've just missed out on some new ones on the bay  but i'm still keeping my eye out for a bargain set ready for a refurb for next summer

i'm maybe thinking vr6 or passat duckbill splitter?

let me know what you think? suggestions for any more diy mods very welcome.

Got some 3m carbon fibre vinyl through the post yesterday so thought i would have a bash at wrapping the badges last night.. the front one a quite a tricky shape to get right and i couldnt get all of the creases out of the outer edge where is curves around.

as per usual its not perfect but it will do for now, until i can be bothered to do it again.

i was thinking about doing the boot plinth as well? what do you think?

gonna attempt some little bits inside next, like the dial surround and the inner door handles as they are pretty scuffed.

pics of the badges.....

if its flat surfaces it should be fine, its stretching around edges which is the tough part. it would need a massive piece of vinyl though, i imagine it would cost ya!

nice one buddy.

thats the things with the rx's i fugured out to do it properly...
purchase the wheels £100-£150
shot blast and powder coat £80
tyres £200

that why i'm on the look out for 15's so i can just use my existing tyres and also 5x100 so no adaptors are needed  :undecided: but then its difficult to find something original.

What you were aiming for looked good, what you got isn't what you were after and even if it was, waaaaaaaaaaaay too much colour on them. The red turned out OK but there is smoke and there is black, that is black and it's killed them.  Instead of selling them couldn't you just strip them and redo them with less coats?

yeah i could but they cost a fair bit to have done? i might just see if they will rub down to a lighter tint all over then re lacquer them?

Sorry.

Agreed, sorry they are horrid.

woah woah woah, bullies!

don't know whats happening with the car, let alone the lights...

might have a break from dubs for a while? my dad is getting a new car in sept and might use mine as a part ex and give me he old 59 plate corsa cdti for a good price. i might run that for a while then maybe go for mk4 or 5 next year?  :undecided:

i just want something comfy, economical, reliable, cheap to run lol so basically the moon on stick!

another option is to keep the corsa as a daily and get a toy, maybe a lambretta or vespa, or maybe a mk1 or 2 but i really dont think i can afford to run 2 vehicles?

either way i wont be running the mk3 for much longer, shes not got much life left in her and i'm not spunking anymore money at it.

just gonna see what happens...

well bugger me, got some rx2's of jonny polish and started splitting them yesterday for a refurb....

snapped 3 bolts and rounded one off... well that little fecker would not budge, took all day, 3 people, 8 or 9 drill bits, a step drill bit, a grinding bit, various chizels, 2 red roosters and a monster!.... finally got it out and started to get rid of the corrosion.

what colour sould i go for on my red mk3 for them? was thinking silver lips with white inners, or maybe cream inners?

on a side note, had a piper back box fitted and its quiter than standard and hangs too low so i've got that to tackle as well now!

couple of pics of the new exhaust, i dont like how it fits, it hangs too low but there is nit much room for it to go higher, but that will be looked into today.

just about to go down to the bodyshop and do a bit more work on my wheels, will try to get some progress up later...

wire brush, fibre wheel, 80 grit, 180 grit, 240 grit and about a days hard work and i've got 2 lips to this stage, decided to paint the lips rather than polish them as they are gonna need a skim of filler. the faces are then gonna be blasted and painted in a colour still to be decided...

yeah sure mate, i'll give you a shout if i get rid because i'm not sure if they will clear my suspension cups.

just used a spline tool from my pals body shop with a socket and breaker bar. snapped one or two and rounded one off, was pretty lucky at how easy the rest came out to be honest.

maybe try soaking them in wd40 and give them all a gentle tap to loosen them. take your time though because if you round them off your pretty much fooked. it took a load of tools sweat and swearing to get one out of mine....

this will be the first and last set i split and refurb
