Title: Cambelt Question
Post by: dom on 10 July 2010, 20:21
A friend of my dad's has a 1999 1.6 MK4, it has just covered 60k miles and is due a service with cambelt change. However there is a sticker just inside the drivers door which looks to be a picture of a cambelt with 29k miles and a date in 2007 underneath. Is it likely that the cambelt was changed at this date??  :undecided:

If this is completely wrong then what is the sticker for? If the belt was changed at 29k miles then it obviously won't need to be changed again just yet. How easy/hard is it to remover the cambelt cover to check the condition of the belt?

Sorry for all the questions but he's off to Germany for a few months on Wednesday and if the cambelt is due a change he wants to get it done before he goes.

Finally he's been quoted £250 for parts and labour including water pump change, does this sound reasonable or is he being robbed? I know that my belt on my MK3 was a lot less than that fitted and that included a full service

Cheers in advance guys

Yes but after 3 years I would change it to be safe.

If its a vw sticker saying about the cambelt then you couls always go to them and get then to print out the informaion on there records to conferm this :)

It's not a VW sticker, and the mileage on the stickers is 50 miles more than a service at a VW garage. He has tried ringing the garage, they have a record of the service but not of a cambelt change.

Looks to me like the car had a service at VW then was taken to an independant garage for the cambelt (presumably for cost reasons?!)
