Title: paint stripper on alloys?
Post by: mellow yellow on 09 July 2010, 20:47
i've got some bbs wheels that need a refurb, is it ok to use paint stripper to strip the corroded finish off before a sand and repaint?

Yeah, just make sure you cover anything rubber, or you dont want it on, tyres, valves, etc

Nitromorse (Y) :)

already on it with the nitro matey. but bugger me its a pain in the arse, it just doesnt seem to want to strip all the paint off. got a feeling its gonna cost so much in the stuff i may as well get them shot blasted for £15.00 per wheel. plus then i can get all for powder coated for an extra £100.00.

i wanted to do it all myself but by the time if finally finished them it could still all be a sh!t job and be flaking off within a week??  :undecided:

i was going to do the same

used nitromorse, but gave up as its so long winded

what wheels are they?

vr6 bbs 15's, the later 5 stud versions.

think they would look good in anth?

how much chance did you give the nitromors? i spent about have a day and to be honest a think it would take too much effort, it just doesnt seem to lift the paint from all the areas, especially inbetween the spokes!

ahh i was doing it on bbs e30 alloys

sooo lots of spokes

i found that spokes were the hardest bit inbetween like, make sure you put plenty on and wait fifteen minutes if it doesnt strip try putting a bit more on the same area :) you using wirewool?

in the end i ended up getting them professionally refurbed :) cost me £220 but am happy with the result

i wanted to do mine by myself, brought the polish and everything

letting it sit for about 1 hour max then applying more to the areas not lifting, didnt try wire wool, just paint scrapers  :lipsrsealed:.

Jesus i can see why you gave up  i'm gonna give it one last shot, might just get them shot blasted and do the paint myself as i've stupidly bought the primer and wet/dry etc already! i'm in no rush though as the wheels i have on are fine, i just fancied a little project. Plus i will also need to fork out for skinniers tyres etc.

yeah was the same for me mate

just a little project i dont even have them on my car yet and i got them refurbed over a month ago :))

things always turn out bad if your rushing trust ahaa

yeahh i reckon shotblasting would be a better shout

Depends what you want to do to it, and how much of a hazard you wand to be!

Wire wool and Nitromors is a good combo.

Or for the lets get dangersious approach, a de coke wire wool drill attachment on a slow setting, although, full PPE would be preferred in that situation.

Shot blasting is good. Bead blasting is better. Unless you have powder coated wheels, then just set them on fire FTW!

i've got some wire wool but its 0000 grade (was for finishing my pool cue) i guess i'll need to get some more abrasive stuff?? what grade would you recommend??

is it possible to buy nitromors in bulk? i bought a small tin which covers 1m square but it nearly all gone and not even done a full wheel yet!

seems like a waste of money getting blasted and powder coated when i add it all up:

wheels £27.00 for all 4 from ebay
courier for wheels £25.00
shot blasting and powder coating  £160.00
4 new tyres £180.00ish inc fitting and balancing
total = £392.00
and i've seen 16inch anni wheels with tyres go for much less then that fully refurbed  :undecided:

I'd love to do it all myself though but its gonna be a long process!

thats the problem =/
but with brand new tyres and refurbished wheels :) you'll get good money for them

not sure about £392 for vr wheels though =/

you got an electric sander?

exactly, overall its a lot of money for some wheels that came standard on a higher model.

I've got a sander but its pathetic and i dont wanna buy another one just for this job. gonna do it as cheap as possible even if it means doing one wheel per month with lots of elbow grease!

fair enough mate

are the wheels completely standard? colourwise?

and what colour are you spraying them?
Title: Re: paint stripper on alloys?
Post by: mellow yellow on 12 July 2010, 22:16
yeah all standard colour although one has had a repaint.

i'm thinking anthracite or something similar?

well i only used nitromorse on my alloys to strip it back to bare metal to polish them up

but if your respraying them, im fairly sure you just have to sand them like enough so the primer sticks better, then primer key etc.

I may be wrong but thats what i was told so thats what i did, and they turned out better than i thought

message me if you like

yeah thats what i was planning on doing but some of the paint had lifted on all the wheels due to corrosion, so was flaking off anyway and even sanding was leaving join marks between where the standard paint met bare metal, if that makes sense? so even with a few coats of filler primer and a a few coats of paint there would still be visable lines so i thought it would be best to take it all back to bare metal and start again.

i'll take some pictures of what i have to deal with.
