I have rust on the roof of my MKV. Just wondered if anyone had any experience of this happening? I've informed my local dealer and they seem to think it'll be covered but I've heard the VW 12 year anti corrosion guarantee often doesn't cover things. The car's less than 5 years old (06 plate).
The rust is to the rear of the roof near the hatch of the boot. One of the pics looks like there's a big gauge out of the paint but it's just dirt!
I'm so pissed off with this car now, VW build quality is sh!te now. In less than a year I've had the air con compressor go completely, the airbag light repeatedly coming on because of a loose connection under the seat (I always move my seat to get in and out to stop the bolsters wearing) and now rust. If I didn't still owe more than I'd get part ex. I'd chop the damn thing in. I'm constantly thinking what next!
-
Did you have the car frommnew? if not, did you inspect it beforehand? Has there ever been damage/repair to the vehicle?
Highly unusual for this to happen unlessmsomething has precipitated this. I've seen older GTIs in near-mint condition without an ounce of respray/repair.
-
Looks like it may have been repaired at some time for that to happen. Take it to a VW or any body shop they will be able measure the thickness of the surrounding paint.
-
I'm taking it in in a couple of weeks when I'm free, too busy at the moment. Although I haven't had the car from new I cannot imagine what kind of accident would have necessitated repair damage to this section of the roof!
Any experiences with VW and 12 year warranty claims?
Any idea of cost to put right if not covered?
-
There are lots of posts appearing on here that suggest crashed cars.
Rust, pulling to left and right, things not working etc.
It would seem many GTI owners can't drive well enough to own these fine cars.

Not much hope for yours lasting then

Unfortunately with roofs, no matter where the damage is, to do the job properly you have to refinish the whole panel. It could have been something as simple as someone resting something on the roof that scratched it, or vandalism, or quite a common reason is a tile falling off a house roof. I've even seen damage where a kids trampoline blew onto a car roof.
If the damage was left for too long before it was repaired - or the job wasn't prepped properly - I'm afraid rust will show its ugly face at some point.
-
Hi,
It looks like its had a roof panel in it to me, but not been done very well!!. Ive seen this before on these.
-
just looks like typical VW of late to me
quality control = sh!te
-
I don't think that is down to VW quality, I would say that in the past it has had some paintwork and water has got under the top coat
-
It's been in for inspection and the good news is it's never been resprayed at all. The paint measurements are all correct so it's been sent off for approval from VW and the guy at the stealers reckons there'll be no issues with the claim.
Phew!
-
So despite all that with the stealers saying no problem no damage, never resprayed etc. VW have declined the warranty claim since they claim it is due to damage rather than rust. The only damage is due to the rust ffs. And they base all this on a through inspection of the ...... couple of badly taken photos by the guy at the stealership.
Livid isn't the word.
-
They need to get their sorry little ar$es out of their comfy chairs and come and inspect it first hand!!
Worth giving citizens advice a call / visit to advise you of the best way forward.
-
I'm awaiting a complaint manager to call me. The warranty dept. do not speak to customers so the people who actually make decisions will not speak to the customer! The guy at the stealers actually told me to give them hell on the phone and I certainly will be. No way can this not be covered under warranty!

Now going through the same thing myself mate. Rust started to show on the off side drivers side wheel arch. Took it to my local dealer to inspect the area and they took some pictures and waved a ptd gauge at it. The general manager didn't seam to bothered about my situation probably cause the car was not bought from there!
True to present form vw turned it down  reckon it could not be proved the panel was faulty.
So i have written a letter to vw uk expressing my anger, just gotta wait to see if i even get a response from them.
My next plan of action would be to sit outside my local dealers with a banner with 'vw's rust dont buy one' written on it and then see what happens

I see you are from Suffolk... is your local dealer Northgate from Bury St Edmunds? If so they are an absolute bunch of barstewards and I would not spend a PENNY of my money there. I wanted to order a part for a Mk2 once and did not know the part number. I called them to ask and they refused to give it to me over the phone unless I ordered it from them!!! I also noticed that their servicing charges were greater than that of Wolsey, Ipswich - my local dealer.
I have spent north of 60k pounds with Wolsey on Golf GTIs and parts and servicing since 2006 because they have always - right from the start - been superb with me. Inchape VW of Colchester where I purchased some parts and a new R32 are also great.
Give Northgate hell I say.
-
Actually its not. Its the other vw dealer in a 'Market' town in suffolk

Ahhh.. I see. Never had any dealings with although Northgate aren't much better

This is surely a result of accident damage, the airbag connection light is also a clue, where did you buy it from, was it private?
It sounds like an unrecorded, basically accident damaged & repaired or salvage etc......
I assume nothing came up when you HPI'd it before buying it?

Read the rest of the topic, it's not damage, it's never been resprayed - VW tested it with a paint meter.
The airbag light is due to a loose connection below the drivers seat and needs the connector removing and the wires soldering together - it's cos I always move the seat to get in and out so it's coming on when it's loose.

The paint meter says nothing more than the thickness of the paint, but as long as your happy with the findings that's the main thing.

Well I've now had it repaired, when it was sanded down it was pin hole rust coming through the brass the guy says. All fixed now tho :)
I'd prefer it if you didn't come on threads making claims you can't substantiate and then reply with suggestions that as long as I'm happy then that's all that matters - suggesting I'm wrong or have been conned in some way.
Of course it's not possible for there to be rust on a modern VW is it? Oh wait I misspoke - just go and see how many Lupos have rusted!

-
Done under warranty I assume?
-
Nah, done by the dealer I bought it off as VW CS are bell ends.
