I mentioned this in another thread.
There is a mark in the leather on my driver's seat.
I was told by VW that it was not a warrantable item as the stitching had not come away.
I do most of my driving on my own and all other seats are fine.
The mark showed up after 2000 miles. There are now 8000 miles on the car and it can only get worse.
What do you guys think?

Thats a disgrace, and after 2000 miles ? :shocked: :shocked: :shocked:
It's clearly a defect of the hide.
My leather is as good as the first day I bought it and I've done almost 6000 miles.
That is not wear and tear, especially after 2000 miles. Jesus, you've only just ran your engine in after that amount of time.

I don't mean to imply anything, but in that picture it looks as though the surface finish of the leather has been scraped off by a hard object; is that possible rather than it just appearing?

Looks like a button on a pocket or something. like a stud in back of jeans or summin

I have looked after the leather perfectly.
I don't wear jeans with studs/zips etc and I make sure my belts aren't going to mark the leather either. I have seen other cars seats get ripped to shreds.
I had a MK4 colour concept which my friend now drives. It is 8 years old and the leather is in great shape.

It can get fixed by a professional or you will have to change the seat squab.

As that is very minor, and if you don't want to spend much, you should get a good result from one of those DIY leather dye repair kits. As mentioned it looks like a scratch rather than wear. Could it have been there from new? - hard to prove though I guess. Unfortunately the VW leather is a bit rubbish, as leathers go.

If the leather is bad quality you will find many more flaws...that is the way it works with leather :lipsrsealed:

It seems that there is a longer edge than the scuffed area where the leather seems stressed. Could spread. However, it can be fixed as mac7 says.

I know it looks like a scratch but I assure you guys that it isn't.
It started off as a tiny mark and had spread across the seat. It's not as if I pulled something across the seat and a 1 inch mark appeared.
I wish I had ordered cloth and a sunroof!!!

It happens with leather and is even more obvious with dark leather. You've been a bit unlucky, but it can be fixed perfectly. Just find a good trimmer in your area and it will be as good as new.
I had a huge cigarette hole in my carpet: burnt right through. It was fixed in 15 minutes and now you'd never know. Cost me though in cash and stress.

Looking at that pic, although the signs of wear has shown more in one area, if you look up and down that in a line, its showing signs of wear right along it.

Its not rude, my thinking is that if he is, then the weight could be causing that to crease and stress more than someone thats lighter in size. It doesnt mean whats happened to the leather is right, but it may give an indication as to why its not lasted as long as it should have.
Well done for saying that too, at least 2 of us have noticed it.

There is a line around 5mm inside the stitching along the whole section of the seat. I pointed this out to VW but they gave me the same answer.
I am not one for 'scamming' things under warranty and I believe that I have a genuine case for getting the section replaced.

I know what you are getting at as any body overspill can cause a stress on the leather. However, stress is one thing but a completely scuffed surface is not good as you rightly say.
One of the reasons I did not get leather is that I have a bony arse (no arse at all, in fact :cry:) and every car with leather had two deep depressions due to my cheek bones. :sick:

I think the section to the left of the key (which is closer to the steering wheel) stretches and then rubs against the other section further back on the seat.
My argument is that it shouldn't be stretching and rubbing on another part of the seat. All in favour say 'aye'.

VW said I could pay for the part to be replaced then try to get my money back through warranty but they couldn't guarantee if I would get it back.
I think I will keep hassling them just.

There is def a fault with that bit of the leather. I had a similiar problem with a BMW and they came up with all sorts of ridiculous reasons. I stood my ground, said I'd contact Autoexpress and What Car, and they fixed it. :smiley:
Basically, the leather is not fit for purpose.

My friend works in sales in the garage and he has recommended that I contact VW customer service and see how I get on with them.
I think I have just ordered LED rear lights too...

I would also contact VW and see what they say, if you tell them that your dealer is giving you nonsense excuses, they will do something about it for you, or at least they should.
I agree with aw1m, the leather must be defective in some way. 12st is in no way fat, I was just double checking you were not 25 stone or something lol.
p.s. If anyone is 25 stone, I'm not sorry, so stop f**kin eating.

My current MD used to work as a Sales Director for the biggest automotive leather supplier and some of the stories he tells about quality and cost are stocking. The leather is split to about 1.2mm goes through a press to give the skin appearance (ie. it's not top surface hide btw) and dyed. Because it is a natural product there will always be inperfections that influence how the dye takes to the hide.
If I were in your position I would get a quote from an expert valeter known to the dealer and ask them to put it forward to the warranty department as an alternative solution.
In situation like this, those who shout loudest usually come out satisfied. The warranty department will have budget and obviously pass claims back through to the supplier so ultimately a local expert should work out by far the cheaper option. Good luck whatever...

I know this isn't going to be of any help to you, but VW's leather is very poor quality. I had the more expensive Nappa (GTI is Vienna) upgrade on my Eos and it was awful. Very few manufacturers offer decent quality leather these days. Another reason not to get it, IMHO :lipsrsealed:

...again only useful in the future...I have aftermarket leather done by VW...a colour very close to Vienna....good quality...about the same in price (you have to buy seat heating) but again for that you get good quality and also far more leather (as in 100 percent...so no leather look :lipsrsealed: parts).... :wink:

My cousin is one of the largest suppliers of leather and many of his customers are the Italian design houses. When I was about to specify leather for my Golf, he was with me in the showroom. His advice was that the VW leather was painted and of rather low quality and very, very overpriced. He advised me that its longetivity would be low. Better and safer to go for cloth he advised and which IMHO also looks better. :smiley:

My last car had leather and to be honest I was happy to go back to cloth this time. It's high maintenance keeping leather looking good and the drivers seat always looks "saggy"
To the OP, a good leather upholsterer will sort that out for you if VW fails to budge in helping you out
