Hi does anyone know how easy it is to change this and what is involved in doing it?
-
Thought they had cam belts... Mk6 has a chain. As for changing the belt, I think it's 4 years or 60k miles but people get told different things by different garages/dealers...

........most go for the 4 years/60k .

It has both, the belt is on the left hand side of the engine and has to be replaced as described. There is a chain on the right hand side of the engine and is actually internal and not intended to be a 'service replaceable' part. A lot of people have been complaining about noisy engines at idle and its been found that the cause is a worn chain and tensioner ...
Does the OP have this problem or have they got their terminology mixed up?

yeah its the chain and tensioner on the right hand side that im on about if anyone has done one before

.........i had mine replaced under a warranty i took out with the car. The engine was fine when cold but rattled like an old diesel when warm :embarassed:.Fine since it was replaced.

Must really get around to doing this. Mine has be like this for at least 40k. I now know you only have to change the chain and tensioner and not the cam adjuster as well. My question is, do you have to remove the rocker cover and clamp the cams (like you would if you have to remove the adjuster) or can you change it without clamping the cams.
My copy of the VW workshop manual only shows how to change all 3 items and not the chain and tensioner on its own. :undecided:
