Title: Nitrous injection installed-Dyno result out! 04/08/2010.
Post by: Hurdy on 05 July 2010, 23:36
Fitted a full Nitrous injection system just before my summer hols

Full progressive sytem with race controller, arming switch, double bottles and heaters and the new style X10 pulsoid solenoid injector system, running an extra 75bhp and 75lbft nozzle and ported into the intake manifold pipe.

Amazing kick in the backside from the extra power and once I've nailed the settings and launch with the kit it should deliver some good 1/4 mile times

I have actually sold my GTi back in November as I got a new job and was given a company car (Golf Mk6 1.6 TDi 90BHP).  I still come on here now and again to see what's happening.  That has just brought a smile to my face.  You are a f***king hero.  That is just awesome!

Update..

Thought I'd resurrect this as I've just done a run with the new settings now I'm feeling better after being ill for a week.

Shonky 0-60 as I was being careful off the line as it was slightly uphill and I have to have the traction control off for the NOS. Also the rear speaker is in along with the added weight of the NOS system means the car is almost the same weight as if it had the rear seats in instead! NOS kicks in at around 50mph, but a picture tells a thousand words.....

            St2+  NOS
20-40    1.5     1.6
30-50    1.4     1.5
40-60    1.7     1.4
50-70    2.0     1.3
60-80    2.3     1.7
70-90    2.9     2.1
80-100  3.2     2.5

30-70    3.4     2.8
60-100  5.5     4.2

As you can see the main difference is in the 60-100mph and is truly ballistic, with a decent launch 0-100mph in the 8's is on the cards.

A 4.2 second  60-100mph is faster than.....

Ferrari F50 at 4.3
Porsche 996 GT2 at 4.5
Ariel Atom Supercharged at 4.5
Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera at 4.6
Lamborghini Murchielago LP640 at 4.6
Nissan GT-R Spec-V at 4.8 seconds
Audi R8 V10 at 4.8

You get the picture

Before the performance box reset I noticed that the standing 1/8 mile speed was 97.7mph and the 1/4 mile was 14.0 after backing off and dropping back down to 74.5mph.

Seriously looking forward to the next Pod day. Interesting times ahead

I am running 75bhp nozzles at the moment, but all I have to do is swap over the nozzles for bigger ones and the system is capable of delivering 150bhp and similar torque.

I'm running a full Max Extreme race controller, so I can progressively control the NOS in every gear and deliver anything from 0 to 100% NOS over a programmable time

I have my own local oil well called Shell

I AVERAGE 18.7mpg and it goes down to 8.8mpg when I use the NOS at full chat.

On a run I can still hit mid 30's on the motorway.

I'm not a high mileage user (approx 9k a year), so fuel isn't a major consideration.

Update...

Took my brave pill today and dropped the 100bhp shot nozzles in, did some more logs, NOS setting adjustments and then a quick test with the performance box.

0-100mph in 9.2 seconds off a 5.2 0-60mph.....so that is 60-100mph in 4 seconds flat

That is equal to the Ferrari F40 and faster than the Lambo Reventon

The car feels soooooo strong in the mid-range with the nitrous on, but grip is still very much an issue. If I hadn't briefly hit the limiter in 3rd I reckon I would have been down near 9 seconds dead

That's surely got to the one of the (if not the) fastest FWD hatch in the UK ?

When you are not running the NOS, is the ED as drivable and tractable as a normal car or a bit of a handful ?

The car is very tractable and driveable as a normal car. In April I drove all the way to the Nurburgring, thrashed it around the 'ring for 24 laps in one day and then drove it back home. 700+ miles out, 350 miles on the 'ring and 700+ miles back. Remember that my car also has R1R tyres, full suspension and engine/transmission upgrades and a Quaife LSD to help control the power

Update...

qtr mile...1st stab.

Had to go a little further afield to a longer, flatter, straighter strip of tarmac to get a qtr mile time up. Only had 3 attempts, and the 2nd one was the best. Trevor phoned me and told me off about not using the nitrous in 1st gear and gave me a few setting ideas to use nitrous off the line instead of revving the engine and using the turbo - definitely worked and is more stable a run off the line. Bare in mind that this was with the sub, spare etc still in the car and just the rear seats out as normal.

Increments to 100mph.

Update...
Went to have a dyno run with the nitrous today. The guys were very helpful and one of the operators has nitrous for his car, so I was in safe hands. It was a Dyno Dynamics "pessimistic" set of rollers at RS Tuning in Leeds. I chose their dyno specifically as they are just about the lowest (as most consider) that are near enough to me who I trust to dyno it correctly.

So, below is a pic of how they had to strap it down. They said strapping down this way loses 2-3% as it pulls the wheels so hard down into the rollers  :undecided:

Here's the bit you've all been waiting for...

438.7hp and a peak torque of 510 lbft on nitrous
339.8hp and peak torque of 381lbft without nitrous.

The settings are less agressive for the dyno than on the road as the nitrous wasn't even set to start until 3200rpm.

Absolutely no sign of slip on the DSG box and AFR's on nitrous were a solid, held 11.5.

Interesting for me is that my torque on nitrous is as high at 6000rpm as the peak without nitrous. Also I'm making more power at 3500rpm on nitrous than my peak power without.

This is a REALLY impressive modification and it would be interesting to compare it to say, the GT2871R that I was thinking of fitting.

Post by: Hurdy on 05 August 2010, 13:26
£40-50 a bottle (11lb) depending on where you go.

I'm using the nitrous quite a bit more than I normally would at the moment for settings etc and they lasted me 1.5 months. Normally, once I've finished the settings I reckon they will last around 2 months on the 100bhp nozzles. You can double that time for 50bhp nozzles and again for 25bhp nozzles. It is probably more accurate to say how many runs and that would be around 40 quarter mile runs on the 100bhp nozzles, 80 on 50bhp and 160 on 25bhp. Based on using around 10 seconds of nitrous a run

Title: Re: Nitrous injection installed-Dyno result out! 04/08/2010.
Post by: Hurdy on 08 August 2010, 11:30
Head gasket leaking - needs a steel gasket
Exhaust has a cracked flange weld at the turbo end (probably due to heat/extra gases) - needs a re-weld
Clutch is slipping (only on nitrous) - upgraded clutchpack needed unless I take the nitrous off in which case it is okay.
Fuel pump cannot cope with nitrous AND engine demand - upgrade fuel pump unless I take the nitrous off in which case it is okay.

440bhp and 510lbft was always going to stretch the car.

Post by: RTechUK on 08 August 2010, 16:23

what a result 510lbft 40bhp   339bhp a little lower than what you got on our dyno?,
It must be a monster to drive, most turbo cars with 400+bhp have loads of lag, but to drive one with 400bhp and 510lbft without any lag must be utter madness.
I did two ED30s yesterday, the second one was dsg and we managed to get 277bhp from the stage1 map and on the test drive I did not want to give the customer his car back. I need to convice the wife to let me have the deposit for our house so I can get me a ed30 dsg ..lol

Great car Nick. 5 door dsg mapped is a hard car to give up

Especially with the extra doors, it would win the family car argument

Got any graphs of the Ed30's you ran with your map on it?

During testing it was a complete animal Nick

3rd and 4th gear pulls are insanely fast and it pins you fast into the back of the seat.

I just need to know if the REVO DSG software will work okay with uprated clutches before I make a decision on where to go next.

Hopefully get the car back in tiptop condition with the clutchpack and a stronger gasket and downpipe and take it from there.

I still don't think that there are any companies that will do just a rod set for an edition 30 as the gudgeon pins are larger on the ed30 cylinders. So I may have to go for rods and pistons, which will be ££££ and on my set-up may mean I go for another car instead??

If I go for it then the N2O system is good to give me 490bhp and 560+lbft and that may mean stronger driveshafts??

Also I may go for hybridising the K04, which should help with airflow and over 500bhp with the N2O.

You're definitely certified John.

If my Ed30 wasn't so bloody poorly all the time and my bank balance allowed it, I would have given you a run for your money.

Mind you, I spent almost 10k pounds in only a few months on my mods... shudder to think  what you've spent.

^^^^ not sure how much I've spent now. I've lost count. It may well end up being the first UK VW with £50k in it

Good to know the limits of when too much over kill actually becomes too much overkill.

I would have killed my dyno then,  It nice to known someone like you IMO is a propper tuner, tune to the limits and beyond, its the only way forward and to be at the top of the game.

On thrusday we ran a our C20let to 399bhp at 14psi on the dyno and we could not load the car up to the 20psi its been mapped for so, today it went on and ran a 11.4s 1/4 TS@131bhp at USC at Pod without nos, Thats with over 8 years of fuel and ignition mapping on the same map and a few melted pistons with a few ripped apart gear boxes.

Well considering that you've inspired / goaded many others - including new and unsuspecting members of the forum - to mod their cars, I reckon you must be directly and indirectly responsible for around 2 million pounds to the UK Tuning Industry... a one-man economic stimulus

Its all in the national interest of course, keeping the economy afloat etc...

What an anticlimax.
All that effort and time spent.
Then put back to stock and sold.

Wasting money like that, are you sure you are not a Lancastrian?

There comes a time when you either bite the bullet and spend thousands on modding a car further, or spending those thousands on a new car. I chose the latter. I don't regret it, yet!!

Ask me again in a couple of months
