Done a few searches and nothing on how to check if there is anyway on how to check gearbox oil without undoing the gearbox plug.
on the 16v gti there is a rubber bung next to the gear selector on the box, when i pull this out its is bone dry & even dusty.
I presume thats where u fill the oil up? and is there usually oil there if it is healthy?
My haynes maunal is on the way!!!
cheers

u fill it where u check it mate, ignore the cap on top
its a pain to check and fill the g/box, especially on a lowered car, when u fill it, it can be messy..
-
sorry to be pain, but where do you heck it! cant wait to get my haynes, can stop pestering then

is it gti? 8v /16v ?
8v is on the sort of underside/side of the gearbox near the end (passenger Wheel side), like a big plug that unscrews, u put your finger in to check, if oil comes to your finger your ok, if not u need to add oil, get a tub with a squirty tube on it and prepaire to get it up your sleeve
hard to explain where it is exactly withoiut showing you

Damn you caught me!

Misky on the 16v (02A gearbox) it's the 17mm hex on the top left diagram Rmachines sent you. If you look under the car from the front you will see it on the gearbox right infront of you.

i fill em thru the speedo sensor/cable hole on the top, much easier. level checking as per normal though, remove filler plug and fill till it starts to come out, refit bung and sensor/cable job done.
tip, i cut the bottom off an old gearbox oil bottle, stuff the other end into the speedo sensor hole and makes a great funnel

Cheers guys! Problem solved!
Jonny - I have a funnel with some hose pipe attached as the R5 GTT was a right pain.
