Evening chaps,
I'm beginning to fall for a newer car, after being carless since before xmas (and not really missing it until now) although I've had access to the missus's spanking new olop (fantastic little diesel)
I've looked at a couple of options, I'm wanting to keep costs down as much as possible, and I've always had a thing for bigger cars hence my first choice.
1) Passat CC 140 GT - but DSG or Manual?? - They come in at about 18k, pretty much fully loaded, tax per year of £155 per year.
2) Golf GTD mk5/6 - again manual or DSG though? - Circa 20k for a manual +2k for DSG, and tax is a little lower at £125 for the year.
3) Golf GTI mk5 ED30 - The only real choice of GTI in my opinion. Tax £235 per year. Deffo DSG.
The main questions are if you have one of the above what are they like to live with day to day?
Running costs? Real life MPG? Toys to definately get?
I'm basically on a bit of a fact finding mission, have read a couple of threads on here, but they were a while ago now so just after some more info after you have owned them all for a while.
I've got to say I am erring on the side of Diesel, as I'm not too fussed about all out speed and which is "faster" as that method of working is being nullified by the cost of ownership now. I'm looking with a view of using it as a commuting vehicle as I'm looking at changing jobs and moving northwards, hence the emphasis on real life mpg.
I'm going to see if I can get a test drive of each this weekend for a bit of my own input, but all advice/experiences are welcomed.

Ed30 all day long out of your listed choices.
Dsg for sure, totally awesome and i certainly wont buy another stick shifter.
Mpg is average, expect around 25 average if you live in the city. 30mpg if you live outa town.
Motorway cruising will get you around 35mpg from 70mph.
Tuning goes without question. Ed30 has the best potential and with dsg will punch above its weight against more powerful performance cars in the 300-350 bracket.
As a family car, in 5 door, ive had 3 mk5 5dr GTi's over 4 years and its more the big enough for my family of 4, eldest child is 7yrs.
Tyres are around £90-£100 a corner. Servicing costs a year around £250 if you factor in service costs plus perhaps Oil top ups, as some may like the odd drop and require a litre or 2 between services.
£40k service is generally the biggy, expect to shell around £400 for lube service ,dsg service and brake fluid service all around this mileage
Xenons, multifuntion steering wheel, Highline computer, Sat Nav, to go with the standard half and half leather/ tartan Cloth.Cruise control, rear parking sensors and even reverse camera off the mk6 can be retro fitted if you have the Rns510 sat Nav.
Put it this way, i cant see me selling this car Ever!!, i cant think of anything that ticks as many boxes as this car does.

The ED30 would be my choice no dought! but if you are looking for low running costs/better mpg then its got to be one of the diesels really mate.
The 140 engine is very economical and fairly stong grunt wise, i drive the missus A4 quite abit and i love it! 50+mpg pushing on :wink:

........edition 30 would be the only choice for me from the ones you have listed. I've just got an 05 GTI (same road tax) as edition 30 & it works out at around 4.51 a week, worth every penny. :smiley:

If you want the to cruise (with a pipe & slippers) go the Passat CC. I like the look especially with the privicy glass.
Otherwise go for the Edition 30. :afro:

Don't forget the normal GTI. It rides better than the ED30, it has a less laggy turbo and it looks better. A dose of superchips and its faster too.

The turbo spools up a full 500 rpm earlier on the real GTI. The supension of the Edition 30 is 10mm lower, spoiling the ride. The fully coloured rear bumper make the car look like a big fat Geordy lass on a night out. And superchips add 40 bhp.

In this case pick one of your cars and imagine yourself in it as an owner and then the other two pull up alongside. Which one would you like to be sat in?

usually is cost based and therefore only you can decide this, but whatever you decide in this section, it should have DSG. :rolleyes:
