Title: Moronic previous owners
Post by: Primus84 on 02 July 2010, 16:38
The previous owner of my car must have been an absolute moron. Not only did I find a receipt for 95 octane fuel when I was recently cleaning the car but today's find takes the biscuit!

I've just replaced the brake light and found that the previous owner must be a dick of the highest order. No wonder the offside tail light was dull, the moron had replaced a 21W 12V bulb with a 5W 12v bulb. Unbelievable, they don't even look the same, the 5W is tiny!

Anyone else got any stories about little findings that make you question what previous owners were thinking?!

The 2.0TFSI engine is designed for "optimal" performance on 98-99 RON. Will work perfectly fine on 95.

Im the 2nd owner of my car, the first was a "young lady" according to the dealer, everything seemed in order and was pretty much mint with 20k on the clock.

I've seen reports that sustained running on 95 can cause issues however!

Can't remember where online but I've also seen it in the AutoExpress GTI MKV buyer's guide!

I'm not convinced by that, while most GTI's have probably been run religiously on 98 by their petrol head owners - I'm sure the audi A3 and A4's owned by reps and family men with the same lump don't enjoy the same TLC.  You don't hear much about them falling to bits because they were run on 95 ...

edit:

I've just noticed that that article also claims the ed30 has stiffer suspension.  Which is wrong ... take what AE say with a pinch of salt.

Engine
The cylinder head in VW’s 2.0-litre FSI engine can develop problems if previous owners haven’t used the super-unleaded fuel VW recommends.

Really? I can't see how. Modern engines adjust the timing with a knock sensor and will know when it needs to back off for 95. Hell even 88 onwards MKII 8v GTI's had this feature although the cap does say  super is recommended. There is nothing different enough between 95 and 98 that I can possibly imagine that would cause cylinder head problems.

Previous owner of mine fitted Wanli S1063 tyres, that's pretty much a slap in the face!

my VW franchised dealer said when I picked the car up to run it on 95 RON, it was a load of crap what VW said it should be run on, as that engine is very hardy and I should just to give it a tank of 98/99 every so often. been running that way for 3.5 years, at 20k never had any probs.

I was able to tell the difference when running on 99 octane fuel against the std 95 stuff in my Mk5 Gti. I could even tell the difference between running on Shell V-Power and Tesco 99.

My BMWs were the same.

Oh, and I would take what VW suggest any day over what some employee at a VW franchise garage suggested!

^^^ I've read somewhere it can ruin the catalytic converter, that's all IIRC?

^^^ Mmm... I can feel a difference between 95 and 99, but not between the actual 99 fuels.  Although I have noticed my car seems to prefer V-Power, strangely.

Previous owner of mine fitted Wanli S1063 tyres

^^^ £46 for a 17" from camskill.co.uk.   That's hilarious, you'd be better off wrapping your alloys in elastic bands!

There are worse tyres than Wanlis out there (but not many, I might add!)

Also, are you sure it was the previous owner who put them on or was it garage skimping on making the car legal to sell on and saying it was the previous owner?

All those expensive summer tyres are useless when the temperature drops below 6C.  Like running on Airfix plastic wheels.
My filler flap says 95 RON so any old stuff is OK.

The most moronic thing is to crash the car.  Never the same again.  Just like Hammonds M3.

Well I assume it was the previous owner as he bought the wheels a few months after buying the car then sold the lot a couple of months later to buy a BMW 330d. Since then he's asked the dealer if I'd consider selling it back... NO WAY!

Which tyres are worse?

Before I bought my GTI, I went to see another one at a main dealer but before they would let me see the car (it had just come in) they had to put 2 new tyres on the front to make it legal. After 20 mins, out it came with 2 brand new Nankang PooSports on it. I walked away!!!!! (car was a total bag of crap anyway).

Kiss goodbye to your Pistons then Egbert. Running a Remapped car with 95 octane, is suicidial  .

As your are, keep going fella.Couldnt happen to a nicer chap :lipsrsealed:

95 RON will never knock out pistons on a modern car.  It might just make the gearbox last longer as the knock sensors warn the ECU to back down on the power a bit.  But that's about it.

Anyway who's Egbert?
My new name is Egbutt.

Yes the knock control makes the required adjustments depending on which fuel you run. Anything about 95 damaging your engine is a load of crap.

The only thing 99ron offers is more power

Be warned that for those running high timing settings (custom remap/revo SPS3), the std ECU may not be able to reduce the timing enough if it detects knock via low quality fuel. If you're mapped, you should always use 98RON fuel - I keep a can of octane booster in my car just in case I can't find any.

Utter borrocks.  One knock and it's fixed.  Don't forget some of that 98 RON stuff is polluted with tank corrosion as a consequence of selling so slowly.

Well previous owners of mine, seems in good condition but one thing irritates me...

4 DIFFERENT TYRES!

How can someone even be bothered to do that? Seriously!

I've always changed tyres in pairs, even if it's 2 of one brand on the front and 2 of another brand on the rear, but not 4 different tyre brands!

Thing is, these cars you don't mess around with rubbish tyres, I can say it has ONE Michellin tyre on the rear left side, the rest are brands i've never heard of.

Jokers!

Would you chance it though with a remap R32uk??

I certainly wouldnt want to risk it , for the sake of 3p, or be a tight ass like Smellybutt wash says

3p !!!! PAAAAH ! Where you buying your petrol from!?

Down here its no uncommon for the super stuff to be 9, 10 Ive seen 11p more :(

I remember this clear as day aswell as I was shocked. Last year when petrol was 1.10 I paid 1.21 for V-Power.

5-6 p difference by me, which at under £4 difference a tank I don't think its worth risking lower quality fuel
