I got very worried yesterday after driving the car home from work. It sounded like a heatshield came off and I was dragging it. It had that tinny scraping/clunk sound. I went out and checked underneath the car. Everything was fine.
In short it was just due to a stone wedged between the brake disk and the plate that protects it. I have no idea how it got there. Must be bad luck. Who knew such a small thing could make that noise. Dealer fixed it this morning. I'm so relieved there was no damage. If this happens to anyone else I hope this calms you down. :)
Edit: hmm...after browsing the forum I stumbled across another thread. Looks like it's common (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=142127.0 (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=142127.0)). Sorry for the post..hehe
