Title: 1997 golf gti brake disc problem
Post by: 3000GT ant on 02 July 2010, 11:19
Hi guys, i'm currently doing a golf gti up for my friend but we have run into a problem. The car needs a full set of brake discs and pads. I have looked on ebay and found some that i think will fit?? the diameter of the old ones on the front are 288mm with 5 studs, so i asked the seller a question, and they came back with 'these brakes are for golfs with ATE braking system so if yours are ATE they will fit'. To check i type the reg into eurocarparts.com and select brake discs they are suggesting a four stud pattern????
can anyone confirm whether mine are ATE??

If anyone can help that would much be appreciated.

P.s very good site for info i've found doing this car up a doddle now

cheers
Ant

1997 should be 288 and 5 stud, ATE makes no difference, VW used a few makers at the time.

ATE is a manufacturer :P I suggest not buying from him lol
When I did mine I looked on eurocarparts and they listed all kinds of discs that wouldnt fit my car (even with the reg) but when I went in they knew exactly what I wanted.
The disc they supplied me with are listed on their site as a vr6 disc. I drive a 8v GTi

Haha i meant, i thought they just made parts, but from what they seller said it sounded like he meant it's a specific system that's not compatible with any other parts. If that makes sense?

All the same to be honest as long as they are 288mm and mk3 offset.

The majority if not all the calipers made for the MK3 288 disc brake system were by ATE. So the supplier is right. If you have ATE calipers you have 288mm discs. Don't what ever you do buy ones listed for the MK4 because they have the wrong offset.
