Title: Bonnet catch problem
Post by: Chris MKV on 01 July 2010, 18:26
Hi folks,

Having problems getting my bonnet catch to engage - any ideas?

The secondary catch is fine but the one you release with the inside lever isn't playing ball! Don't know if anyone else has had a similar problem...

Thanks Alan - that is actually the opposite problem to mine which won't close.

Still haven't been able to sort it but I am going to get it looked at in the morning - it is still under warranty.

I've got the same problem on my 05 GTI. Had to resort to really slamming the bonnet shut. My local repairer, Storm Developments, are going to look at it next week, along with a non opening passenger door !

Once you get it sorted make sure every now and again my spray it with WD40 to keep to free. My mechanic told me this a while ago as he also has a MK5 and Ive had no problem since, the release has been smooth as you like.

Surely you'd want a little grease on it not WD40?

Would have the same effect

Not really, given that WD40 is a de-greaser and the grease will stay on the latch to help protect it from water and corrosion. WD40 will remove this protection

I see your logic, I can only pass on what I do and it works for me. Im only talking every few months rather than weeks.

I now have a shiny new bonnet lock. Have to say the dealer was great and they fitted a new catch on less than an hour after dropping the car off.

We rang them at 5.30 pm and by 9.00 am it was fixed and ready to go.
