Title: GTI Edition 30 or R32?!
Post by: bubbleandkick on 01 July 2010, 12:48
Hello Guys,

I am on limbo as you can see with these two cars. Correct me if I am wrong, but as far as I know they can both be found at very similar prices.

At the moment our company have decided they have done enough to our Mini Cooper to now move on. We will soon be selling it and would like a new toy. But which?!

This place is most likely the best place to ask, VW just tell you the best is the one they have available that day!

Honest opinion guys, I know the majority of you will have a GTI. But do you have regrets, whats the high and lows, what does one have the other doesn't?

Our intentions are to do gradual modifications, and then track tuition as this is what we specialise in.

Can a GTI standard ever be better then a Edition 30, what are the main differences? (under the bonnet)

Which car has the most potential? I believe the R32 is a NA V6? But you have a turbo to play with in the GTI's!

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Seb.

Hello Seb

Well all three cars, ed30, gti, .:R32 all have great handling as standard! the .:R has all wheel drive so will probably feel more planted on track as standard even though weighing considerably more.

As far as modding goes theres only so much you can do to the .:R powerwise exhuast, intake, shrick cams etc, or if you wanted to spend quite afew £s then you could go down the HPA turbo route, 500HP plus is possible

The standard Gti, can easily and safely be remapped with the appropriate mods to 280ish HP give or take.

Where as the ED30 has a larger turbo (K04) with uprated injectors, larger inter cooler etc, with just a stage 1 remap alone you will see 280HP, and then dependent on budget high 350+HP is possible!

Either of the three cars are superb, and have a fantastic chassis with so much potential!!

If it were me buying again id go for the ED30, all round great car as standard, but so tunable! just check out Hurdys car in the mk5 build project section!

The GTI remaps to 250, the ED30 with a remap is 300! The R32 is indeed a 3.2 N/A V6 with 250 standard but it's heavier than the GTIs. Apparently the Ed30 in standard DSG form does 0-60 is 5.6 whereas the R32 in DSG is 6.2.

Hello again,

Thanks for the prompt reply already!!
So does  the GTI and GTI ED 30 have the same engine, because so far I have been told, yes. Or, no, different internals. No complete different engine. No, just a different map. No, different turbo.

And how many were made? I thought it was 1600, but looking through the forum, some have plate no.s with 2000.
Your knowledge and advice is greatly appreciated!

Seb.

Hi,
The engine in the ED30 is the same as the Leon Cupra and similar to the Audi S3 engine. All have K04 turbos. There have been plenty of discussions on here about the similarities. A quick search will bring them up.

R32 sounds nice buts its not a chuck-able.
They were planning to make just 1500 of the ED30  but they kept on going.

If I had the choice I would get an ED30 over the others (for lots of reasons). My budget at the time wouldn't stretch for one so got a a GTI. A few choice mods and I love it to bits ! Clearly with the ED30 having a larger turbo it will remap much higher, but you need to remember that these are FWD. The 250 my GTI is pushing out is more then enough for me to put through the front wheels.

I have had both a 2008 gti and a 2009 r32 i have atm both dsg.

Both great cars as has already been said!

Gti- light, nibble, more 'fun' to drive, for a few ££ u can get it mapped n be running 250ish bhp. cheaper tax, insurance n uses slightly less petrol.

R32- 4wd was the first n best thing i noticed when driving it, no wheel spin in the wet or dry when you floor it from the lights. better styling imo, smoother power delivery and that v6 raw
Also have a nice lump of cash liying around you can get a turbo fitted n be pushing out up to 500bhp

Both great and its just down to personal preference and what you are looking for in a car.

Yeah, but Hurdy has spent eye watering amounts on LSDs etc

LSD makes the differance round corners a bit yes but a well set up eddie with good tyres is awesome, i liked driving the VWR car with the diff because you can slam it into roundabouts its awesome but at the same time im more than happy without to be fair

Yeah can have as good a tyre as you want (Im running Goodyear EF1 Asyms) but you always going to understeer going into a corner at too fast a speed and with soo much torque your always going to wheel spin.

ive got a hell of a lot of torque alan, and i struggle to induce wheel spin

even when coming off the lights you need to hammer it in first to get a little, but its all about throttle control aswell. oh yeh and goodyears suck!

Sounds like you got it all sorted then ;)

A remaped (Im guessing by the lots of torque?) ED30 that struggles to wheel spin? . . . . :undecided:

Throttle control is just human traction control, whats the point in having ALL the power if you cant put it down. Dont get me wrong, theres A LOT to be said about being able to thread the power down.
