Title: 16v startup problem, fuel issue maybe??

Greetings peeps,

Have had a mk2 16v sitting on the drive for over a year.
Last started her 2 months ago and she ran fine for an hour or so..

Anyhoo, with a wedding ahead, i had to shift the car off the road this week.
Started off by sorting the rear brakes which were well and truly seized, then came the engine...

At first the starter motor was not turning, but clicking, replaced the battery and she started turning but no ignition.
Several attempts later, i decided to check the spark plugs/ignition leads, with a screwdriver, sparking no probs there..
I also chucked a jerrican of unleaded petrol in but still no luck  :sad:

I decided to open the air intake pipe (the mahoosive one) and found it to be bone dry.
Also no petrol smell after all the attempted starts.
Fueling problem or am i going about this the wrong way?
I loosened the bolts around the metering head one by one and there was deffo fuel getting to there so I am bamboozled  :angry:
As a last resort, I fired some spurts of cold start spray into the intake and the engine fired no probs, but would not sustain and die after a few seconds.

Serious depression! I had to get my brother to tow the car off the drive and into a lockup untill i have time to investigate this further.
Any ideas chaps?

Is the fuel pump running.

if it is, disconnect the plug from it and try again, if you dont hear the in-tank pump prime then this could be your problem.  if all that checks out id say the problem is the pressure is too low, ive had this caused by clogged fuel filter, and another time by a faulty non-return valve in the pump

Hmmm pretty sure the fuel pump was running, not sure if the in tank pump was priming.
RJ how I am guessing ear to the boot of the car for a buzzing sound?

Is it worth changing the fuel filter at this stage as I got one lying around!

if you disconnect the plug on the main pump under the car you should be able to clearly hear the lifty pump in the tank :)

if you have a filter sat there and your lines dont look too crusty I'd just get under there and do it, as long as everything undoes ok should take all of 10 minutes

Try it tonight, it takes literaly 5 seconds once you have found the plug and cos my golf is low i was going in blind  :cool:

Goops have you had any luck with getting the Golf to start ?
