Title: DSG knocked out of gear...?
Post by: kingbilly on 29 June 2010, 21:09
Was in a supermarket car park this morning doing a bit of shopping...on driving off I was in manual mode (DSG) in 1st gear and doing about 5mph...didn't quite take a corner right and clipped it with my rear wheel (didn't damage the monza...phew...!!!)...straightened up and started to accelerate...but had no drive at all as if car was in neutral.

Wouldn't have thought you could knock the car out of gear...and certainly not by a slight knock on a rear wheel.

Took the car for a spirited run after that with plenty of gear-changing and all was well.

Comments / thoughts most welcome.

Thank you,
Billy

Sounds like the mecatronic unit is over heating , its known problem with DSG's. There have been many threads on this issue, do a search on DSG problems. Its called loss of drive , ive had it on my ed30 when pulling out of JCT, yes its bit scary when you see a car coming at  you with no drive!! Hope you get it sorted soon

Steve,

What do you mean by overheating...?

I had been out driving earlier for about 10 minutes...engine then switched of for 10 minutes...and then a 5 minute drive to the supermarket...walk round the shop for 15 minutes...started car up again...and then fault occurred.

Thank you,
Billy

Was yours a one off occurrence or did it need fixing?

My Ed30 only did it every blue moon, I bought the car from new did 12k miles and it started doing it from about 5k miles. I did make the service manger aware of it and he offered to replace the unit (big Job) or new gear box, but I just lived with it TBH then sold the car back to them and got 18k aginst a new Mk6 GTD. In the states VW issued a re -call on some DSG box's!! Its in the forum somwhere GTI james sufferd the same problems!!

Signs of faulty mech's units, normally start with bad 1st gear pull off, not smooth gear changes and slow take up in reverse.

As per other reply on OP's heading, doubt its the Mech unit.

Did the dashboard gears flash all at once when it failed??

I remember now. Didn't they extend the warranty on the DSG boxes in the states?

Yes they did, I think box's were faulty from 2005 onwards don't qoute me on that though. Even now there are still problems with them on the MK5's. My GTD seems to be working well touch wood!! I know this much I would only ever have DSG its a fantastic piece of engineering, just amazes me every day

My gear changes are jerky when cold when using manual, also when i put it into reverse i have to wait ages for reverse to engage, if i dont and touch the throttle it clonks into gear. Sometimes when pulling out of junction it takes ages to fully engage clutch, almost liek clutch slip.... My VW warranty has just ran out too :undecided:

Should i extened and claim??

Had a local indie garage run a DSG gearbox diagnostic today...and came up with the error code -

28775 - "No communication with gear selector module U0103 - intermittent"

Car now going into stealers on Thursday...hopefully the same fault will register and simple fix available...car still got 16 days warranty left.

Anyone else ever had this code come up...?  How was it fixed...?  How serious do you think it is...?

Thank you,
Billy

There was a recall for 08 DSG cars due to similar problems (cars jumping out of gear) - VW changed the gearbox temp sensor.

Before you go overboard - are you SURE that the box came out of gear on it's own and that you didn't inadvertantly catch the gearstick?

Hurdy,

Absolutely sure the box came out of gear on it's own...otherwise I would have to have caught the gearstick and moved it from M to D then to N...I would have noticed this.

After the loss of drive I stopped the car completely and moved the gearstick from M to D and back again...and got drive...therefore it was in M all the time during my loss of drive.

I am trying to remain calm and not go too overboard...but think of the consequences if this happened whilst joining a free-flowing road of traffic travelling at 40/50 mph.

The stick is just an electrical switch.  Has anyone spilt coffee or pop onto the gear lever?  This might lead to a temporary loss of communication between stick and computer after jarring the car by hitting a curb.
