Hi all,
If I buy 2 brand new headlamps, Xenon with bulbs and control unit on the back of them, will they fit in with no problems or do I have to buy wiring or anything else?
John

you need to fit an auto leveler on the rear axle (as per factory fit) and you need headlight washers fitted.

The washers are part of EU regulations.

Yep you need auto levelling and washers

You can retro fit oem xenons with no issue. People say you need auto levelers and washers, But you dont in order to pass a UK MOT.People will also say that the police will pull you up on it, but find a sharp eyed copper that could point this out on the roadside
You can fit washers and levelers but you will end up spending another £350 appox to do so.
I have done the same, no levelers nor washers, and have had them set up at an MOT centre on the lower setting incase i ever carry 3 fat blokes in the car so that i dont end up blinding anyone.
Been on the car for 6 weeks or so, with no issues whatsoever.

Very true, what copper will even know that law, not many. You can say that you brought then car with them on at then end of the day.
So am i right in saying all i need is to headlamps with ballast?
-
yes
-
Might order them tomorrow in that case...
They where £183.00 each + Vat, For genuine ones too :-)...... Does that sound a good price?
-
might pass an MOT, but still illegal.
-
i don't know where you are getting the headlights that cheap from but please tell?
I've done the whole xenon retrofit on quite a few golfs now inc the levelling and washers, its very simple but the only thing that makes it a lengthy process is kufatecs loom its too p?ssing short and needs extending.
There is also 2 sensors needs fitting 1 on each axle on the passanger side, plus an extra control module for the xenon range.
Awesome when its done cos you know its done properly.

Lets hope you dont crash mate, a non EU regulated modification. They can say you crashed as you had no washers/auto levelers and so your lights were not operating correctly. Then wave bye!

Jules, im sorry but thats total and utter Bollox mate. My insurance company know of my addition, with no issue
If its not safe then the British MOT Test standard wouldnt allow it.

@jules
I thought you had your account removed from here ???
Wernt you Banned??

Non EU mod???..
As long as modification are declared to your insurance company and its passes UK M.O.T then your fine to drive with no problems. Im not fleet insurance so i can drive anything, my cars covered under fleet so need to inform of mods
-
As long as ur happy to take the risks mate then it's fine. The fact is it's not legal as the law states it must have self levelers and washer jets (have a read on the dvla website) it's just a grey area and police have more important things to do.
Once upon a time it was fine for neons, people fronting and driving on your phone, things change and as more aftermarket xenons cause crashes due to poor aiming and dazzling oncoming traffic I'm sure the law will clamp down on it.
I was removed and I'm happy to stop posting if the mods wish, I joined up as I had some people asking me for help with detailing so joined to reply to pm's
-
Just don't crash at night. Then they won't blame it on your lights
-
lol if i crashed at night frontwards on, the lights would be abit smashed up and hard to tell .
They have been check ed an an MOT Station for current aim and light pattern. They have been set on the low side incase i ever carry a heavy load so means they still wont be too high for oncoming traffic.
In 6 weeks ive never been flashed yet, my 1st GTi (Laser Blue) had factory fitted ones, i was always being flashed!!!!

they can even check if your brake light was on to see if you tried to stop nowadays. If your happy that's fine, I'm simply stating the fact your lights are illegal, not telling you that you need to remove them or anything, they probably make you drive safer as you have better vision!
Remember an MOT is not to check legalities, it's to make sure it's road worthy.
-
Insurance companies etc never check to see if you was braking, headlights on/off or anything. I work at a body repair centre for 4 or 5 of the biggest insurance companies in the uk and no one comes to inspect a single car, all that is done is an estimate is sent to the insurance, its authorised and repaired.
Anways, we are getting off the point of it all now
Headlights will fit, and ive foudn leveling kit for £300.00
-
If I lived in the UK I'd be inclined to make it as legal as possible as it seems like things are stricter over there than they are here in Ireland.
People have flashed me with standard bulbs in standard headlights  I think it depends on what angle you are at is it only seemed to happen when a car was coming down a hill towards me.

IIRC this applies only to cars fitted with xenons at the factory. There is nothing about retrofitting them.

Does that amount for the headlamps include the bulbs, ignitors and ballasts? Has i know genuine bulbs even at cost are over £100 then you have the ballasts and ignitors which are not cheap?
I don't offer it myself has the time it takes to fit every thing would cost a bomb...but I have done a few cars over on the mk5golfgti forum including a pirelli edition of Rich's i've got the fitting down to a tee now and can do the lot in about 4 hours, that includes
Bumper off
Fitting a new washer bottle
Fitting the washer jets
New bumper inserts
All the water pipes and new pump
Fittin a new loom for the levelling and washers
Wiring through the bulkhead and into both front and back wheel wells for the level sensors,
Fitting the 2 level sensors
Wiring into the central electrics and also the clocks for low washer warning.
Its not has clear cut has you might think and to offer it has a service you need to cover your back on legal issue's cos IF someone does crash and IF they do blame the lights they may look at you for some compo.
If you can get them cheap it may be easier for you just to try and make a bit of money on top of a kit?
Cheers
Darren

Doesn't matter what insurance companies check in the event of a crash.
IF you hurt/kill someone, and theres an investigation, they WILL go over your car with a fine tooth comb.
Xenons cause accidents when not properly fitted/looked after, so no mater what you THINK is legal, isn't worth anything, if they are not correctly set up and end blind people out on the road.

Yea ok, but,
If you fit oem Xenon lamps with level sensors, The car passes M.O.T with the beam pattern and height then your fine.
-
Let's put it this way, if I went to look at a GTI advertised as having Xenons and found out it was only a half-finished conversion without the self levelling and washer system, I'd be pissed. Either do the whole job and do it correctly or don't do it at all.

Definitely worth doing it properly if you're going to do it at all. The prices mentioned seem reasonable compared to how much they cost as an extra brand new.

Not if your planning on the selling the car later and putting it back as it was built :nerd:
Im keeping my Halogens for that very reason, and will recoup the cost of the xenons seperatly

Very good Saint Steve, Sometimes dont you just wish you never asked

hi...my 2nd post in this forum...interested to retrofit xenon...may i know where do u buy the xenon john?looking for ebay with no luck...

oh god yeah sometimes make you wonder.
My xenons have been aligned by an MOT centre, they wont blind anyone as they are set not too. So for someone to say my lights were blinding when they are set lower then what they would of been on levelers makes me chuckle.
If and when id sell my car, i would give the option to the perspective purchaser as to whether they would want the car with xenons or put back the poorer mans Halogens. Now thats a hard choice isnt it .

keep looking on there, they do come up from time to time, but will sell fairly well as they are quite sort after as a retro-fit.
