Title: 51 Gti 1.8t problems
Post by: bailey45 on 29 June 2010, 07:23
I have a 51 plate gti, it has only done 32,000 miles. But recently I have had a few little problems but got them sorted, but now for some reason it only starts when it wants to, I had a new battery in march   But sometimes when I go to start it there's nothing it doesn't even click and all the clock and mile counter just show blank screens, it's annoying because yesterday it started first thing no probs, then when I got to work I parked up let it for 2 mins came back and wouldn't start, but after I had finished my day it started first time again without jumping it! Sorry to ramble on but it's annoying not knowing what it's going to do !

i had a similar problem to this on a 200sx once.  turned out to be a dodgy starter motor.  the solenoid was sticking.
could be the cause

it wouldnt be the engine earth cable cause that would mean it would try and start, slowly die and burn a wire out...

ignition switch fault at rear of barrel maybe ? had this on polos . next time it happens you need to check live feeds at starter etc and if nothing then work your way back towards the switch

I thought the service had cured the problem bit it hasn't. It's a really wired one what happens is I get into my car and it won't start so I take the key out and the clock needles go down to 0 but they click as if they are trying to go futher down, and the digital displays flicker on and off, resetting the clock back to 0:00. I have also noticed when I'm driving with my lights on the blue back light on the dash occasionly flickers.
