Title: All The Cars We Left Behind Today
Post by: ErikGTI on 28 June 2010, 19:17
Maybe a nice way to evaluate in real life how fast our GTI (remapped or not)..

I had a very brief encounter with a red pimped old Mazda huge exhaust and a lot of noise....
We were at the lights, he pulled up with a scene and theatre straight from Fast and Furious it made everybody looking ...I found out what he wanted took my time and when I gave a bit more gas without drama (besides a slight snarl) I quickly overtook and went on my way ...never saw him again...

It must have been so humiliating for the man behind the wheel... :smug:

BTW
If it gets fans...maybe make it sticky I myself find it fun to read (on other fora)

I remember that thread, I caused a right kick off when unreported back that I pissed on an Edition 30 when driving an Astra VXR.

Stubborn lot these new MK owners!

Not hard when a vxr is tunable to 300bhp and an ed30 is only 230bhp standard though  :undecided:

Purely coincidental i assure you

Doesnt surprise me then if both were standard, theres only a drivers difference in most modern hot hatches anyway!
I know, i have the same engine as an ED30, well its better.....well before he modded it lol

Caught up with that evo that murdered me last week... gave a much better showing and probably suprised him a little (but not much).

When you do beat cars on the road, do you keep on going or just show them your faster for a short while then relax back down to normal speed. i.e. Just letting them know you can beat them if you want to. ?

Depends if you are in a hurry or not

GTD after GTD after GTD.

Joking.

I find that if I am daudling along minding my own business then I am usually chased by Smart Cars, Aygo's or little Honda, Kia thingies, almost as if they have a point to prove.

Nissan Navarra pick ups are always right up my chuff.

All dealt with a blip of the throttle and the contempt they deserve.

Inadequate car syndrome.

Also had a brand new Pious try to keep up last night. Mr 21yr old Estate Agent gave up after 300 yards of clear dual carriageway.

If I am pressing on the bored photo-copier sales guys in their 3 series and A4 diesels don't want to play.

Seen a few Focus RS's around now but not being driven fast. They look mean.

Yet to have a good fair scrap but not looking for one.

Had a focus RS appear in my back mirror the other day, couldn't shake him, but he drove like an idiot. 6" off my bumper and nearly stacked it into the back of me when we met traffic. I'd say he was CERTAINLY faster than me, but a much worse driver............ plus my car is a shadow blue one, maybe not everyones cup of tea, but more popular than the snot green colour he'd chosen......... I might add, he wasn't quick (or brave enough) to overtake me though.....

Get mapped and you'll leave the RS for dust  (unless he is mapped also  )

This is one penguin that is not scared of bigger fish... (and actually it is the penguin agility that helps escape from an orca... not always speed)

But I'll also add that having fun on the road is simply that... you can never tell if the other guy is driving it to the same level you are. If you are that good a driver that you can keep up with a faster car then that's the answer...

for example GTI vs EVO... if the guy driving the GTI is good enough and knows the road well enough to have a go at the EVO and win then it does not mean the GTI is faster or equal to the Evo on that bit of road. Stick the driver of the GTI in the Evo and I'm sure he would be able to shake someone in a GTI behind him.

That having been said though I do find these cars like Evo's and Impreza's are a tad overrated now. They were fast in the 90's but modern day hot hatches have been developed so much that in 90% of situations they can match the 4wd Turbocharged Jap saloons.

I was chatting to a guy with a Subaru WRX 2007 model. The WRX level Subaru comes with around 240 hp from it's turbocharged engine. By comparison the STI comes with around 300 so the WRX is the closest in terms of power to a modern hot hatch. We were discussing mapping options. He said that a map on his Impreza only took his car to 260hp and that with a map, intake, exhaust and FMIC he was getting just under 300hp.

With a stage 1 map on a GTI you can be pushing 270hp. Which coming from a quoted 207bhp is an increase of 63bhp?

And it's not just VW either... a Focus RS can be mapped from 300hp to 350hp pretty easily. The amount of cash European manufacturer's can throw into developing the engines is soon going to outpace the Jap cars who have only been turning the boost up on each successive model.

...I myself finds it less complicated....Lights green 2 cars hit the pedal and the difference is there in seconds...that is all to it..

Last week a Scirocco tried me.....on the highway...it was most likely not the "R" because actually he was no game at all... :smug:

LMAO was it a Scirocco Diesel? They always seem to try it on - the petrol ones seem to know how to behave but the diesel roccos are always after me.

I don't know but the Scirocco was a black beauty I must admit

Since traffic was dense and I could not get past a Mini in front of me (Scirocco behind me), the Scirocco swirled 3 lanes to the right behind me and floored it...unfortunately for him I spotted that action quickly, so I overtook the Mini in front of me.....(I admit on the wrong side :embarassed: ) a stupid Mini "S" doing 100 km per hour on the fast lane ....and before the Mini in front of me knew what was happening I was in front.
Now the Scirocco and the GTI we both had a clear road in front of us...perfect for a shoot out.....but within seconds I was simply a size too big for him...(even without a remap I would still have beaten him I guess).

That is one thing I am sorely going to miss about the Golf. The VAG engines have so much power available.

I left a Golf R wondering if he should have saved a few grand and bought the same car with an Audi badge. Once in 3rd i left him behind. He was a 10 plate though so i doubt he was fully trying!

A 1993 Rover 216 GTi which I had for 16 years. I had no trouble apart from two ignition modules. The first one packed up 5 years ago 1/4 mile from work so I towed it in and fixed it. After that I thought I would join the RAC, I'm a motor vehicle technician but I'm not a magician. The second one was last year again 1/4 from work so the RAC towed me back to work and I fixed it again. After that I bought a module and kept it in the toolkit, I still have it today if anyone wants one.
