Title: Installation advice
Post by: SW VR6 on 26 December 2004, 23:28

I've got a 97 VR which currently has the original Sony radio / cassette player (XR-6859RDS) with no CD changer wired in.

I've just got myself a fairly modest Kenwood KDC-W4527 MP3 receiver and just wanted to know if there's anything I need to be aware of before attempting to install the new unit (I'm no expert when it comes to ICE - even the basic stuff!).

I guess it's not a straight swap, as the Kenwood unit was supplied with a harness adaptor with active antenna system. Is this right or have they (the supplier) sold me something I don't really need?

Any advice appreciated.

Should be a very easy swap, the mk3, unless someone has hacked it, will come with a normal iso connector that will plug straight into the Kenwood. Not sure about the 'active antenna system' but the normal iso connector will have a wire to power an electric aerial.

Best thing to do is just take your current stereo out and see if it makes sense. Failing that pay a car audio place about 30 quid.

you may need a little convertor for the 2 adaptors. halfords sell these. the easiest way to get the headunit back into a mk3 dash is the remove the glovebox, but if you've got a VR you've probably got an airbag in the top hole. just be careful the wires don't fall down the hole under the headunit and get trapped.
