Hi guys I am a newby so go easy on me.
My Brother has an nice Mk2 that has had numerous mods on it, that were done by its previous owner including the brakes.? We are having trouble with the back brakes and need to identify whether it has Mk2/3 or 4 rear calipers fitted. We have lost contact with the original owner so cannot ask him, as he has moved.?
Can anyone point me in the direction of some photos of each type please so that we can quicky ID them ?
I suppose one answer is to buy 3 Haynes manuals but we aren't made of money and the local library is shut until he new year? and I don't want to turn up at my local dealer with Caliper in hand and start asking a load of muppet like questions !

lucky i took some pictures last week when i was fitting my mk3 rears?
Clean ones are mk3's that have an internal handbreak mechanism. The dirty old mk2 ones have a spring on show so i hope that helps.
If your handbreak doesnt work then they are probably mk2 calipers?
sorry about the picture quality as i used my fone camera...

Excellent, Many Thanks for this. I have not actually looked at the brakes on the Golf yet so cannot tell from these photos what it has.? Does anyone have a photo of the mk4's ??

the mk 4 ones are alloy and have sort of cooling fins on the top. the mk4 ones blue put on there must be front ones or something? i don't have a photo but if you look at david hawkins' photo gallery i think he has some pic's of his. or just go to a car park and find any mk4, or similar age audi and have a look through the wheels!
-
oops posted the wrong ones
-
Thanks guys I will let you know what we find out. ? I have done a search myself and founds some piccies of the mk4 and it does indeed have fins, so I know what I am looking for.
Next question. Does anyone know if the Mk2/3 and 4 all share the same rear Caliper carrier or did they put different sized ones on each car for different sized discs ?
-
what for, the front? or rear? i had standard mk 2 calipers on the rear til i got mk 4 ones and the were a direct swap, all i needed was a conversion hose as they use different fittings, good time to upgrade to goodridge!
the fronts have different carriers, if thats what your after as well!

Doh ! Sorry I am nursing a hangover, I meant rear and have tweaked the last message

in which case i don't think there is any difference. like i say, i just did a straight swap.
