Can someone help me please !!!
Car - Golf GTI III, P-reg 97'
Electric window goes up and down 4 inches but not all the way leaving my window half open.
Picked up replacement motor along with regualtor down the breakers and that worked for 1 week. Except when you pressed the button long enough to go automatically up it kept stopping and going down an inch. You had to press the button 3/4 times for it to close. Today the window is jammed and it won't go up or down.
I can hear a noise which sounds like the motor is trying to work but nothing happens.
Can someone relate to this problem and offer me a cheap solution.

some how i dont think you are gonna find a cheap solution. Sounds like a trip to your local VAG dealer. NO!!!!!

My drivers side window developed a similar problem, wouldn't go up all the way. It would slow down, stop then go down. Had it done at VAG dealer during service, cost about ?500 just for that!
?1200 for the whole service!
Last time I ever went to the dealer!!
They said it was the regulator / window guide.
On the up side, the problem has never come back.

:( ?500!! Thats really cheered me up! My car goes in to the local dealer this Thursday because I admitted defeat with my drivers side window.
It won't go up or down, and I can't get the motor out because the manual tells you to lower the window to release the glass. Doesn't tell you what to do though if the motor won't work and there is no obvious means to manually wind down the window.
I'll let you know what happens.

i dont know wether this is any use but i changed mine in my mk2 and it was easy and i got the motor for twenty quid from the breakers
i dont think they are a lot different in a mk3

Thanks for all the feedback, from checking other forums people have experienced similar problems on their MK 3.
I'll purchase a replacement regulator and hope that does the trick and advise afterwards.
Thanks again !!

For those interested in purchasing a replacement regulator.
Breaker - ?35
VW - ?67
Euro Car Parts - ?52.86
All include VAT.
-
VW won't give me a refund if the problem doesn't resolve, where as Euro car parts will (except 25% handling charge).
Why have you had bad experiences with Euro car parts.

I'm always having this problem on my MK2, I have a total closure alarm and when set the rear window on the right gets stuck half way up, I just normally squirt some WD40 in the window channels and it cures it. I find that after jet washing the car it starts to play up, I have taken the door trim off before and removed the motor and regulator to give a good lubing up, after which the window was flying up and down.

I dropped my car off at the ocal dealer this morning with a fair degree of worry about the size of the bill after reading some of the comments. I was very please though to be given a price of just over ?200 to fix my drivers window (new mech) and dash lights (new relay or something).
I was not so impressed at being kept waiting for an hour having turned up at 4:45 pm to see if the car was ready, just to be given a price and told the job would be done by Tuesday.

The favourite one I find that garages do is promise to call you to tell you what needs to be done, you then wait all day and get no call so you phone up and they say that they were waiting for you to call them.

Folks,
I've finally replaced the regulator and now the window is up thank god !!!
New problem - Motor sounds like its chewing on the cabel when I try to open the window so I'm reluctant to opening it.
Used lubracant and tried two old motors, what ???do I do ??
Is there a telephone number for GTI I can phone for advise or does anyone recommend another way to resolve this problem ??

Having thought I was sorted when VW quoted around ?200 to fix my window and another small problem as per my earlier post I finally got the car back today.
End result was a bill for ?400, they replaced the regulator but then reported that because the motor had been working against a partially and then a fully seized mech the motor had burnt out. It would power the window up and down but very slowly. The cost of a motor ?159+VAT. Could be your motors have suffered the same?
The window now works like a dream, but handing over ?400 hurt, a lot!

Good old VW , nice and cheap!!

I've come up with a really cheap solution if your electric window stops half way up.
Only wind it half way down. ;)

Sounds spot on Mod ;D
