Just changed my cooling fan on the radiator so now i can sit in traffic!!!! The fan i took off had three connectors on it and the new one only had two! Just wondering if any one knows what the difference is??
-
I think the 3 connector one has a 'run-on' facility. Something to do with the fan coming on when you have shut down.
I went the other way and fitted a 3 connector one in place of my 2 connector one. Had to swap over a bit of loom out of the my Mk2 so that I had the right connector.

My two connector one has a run on! could be that i just got lucky in connecting the right wire on! ;D think both of the wires did have power after the ingnition was off! ??? but it was a hot day so cant be sure!
-
I found some info in the Mk2 Haynes manual..............I'll scan it and post it for you, but basically the 3 pin one is twin speed, the 2 pin one is single speed.

Cool! that was one of me thoughts yesterday! hunted throught the wiring diagrams at the back of my haynes but there were so many for Radiator Fans i just worked it out for my self!

Here's what I found:-

Should really read that section shouldnt i! oh well! yea i did replace a 6 blade with a 4 blade! but it was free! if its useless ill have to do an upgrade!!
-
As rich and hazel said the thermoswitch has three pins for twin speeds. I remember reading something by Steve Cresswell that the 3 pin thermoswitches aren't available anymore and VW give you a 2 pin one these days. I remember the article because the bloke in it cut the original connector off and put spade terminals on and then obviously not having a clue he put them on so that the fan span the opposite way blowing the air out the front of the car.
He wondered why he overheated.
-
Yea i saw that one too!! in the golf last month! It did make me think twice when doing mine!!
-
the radiator fan on my 89 mk2 golf gti is not working, car over heats in traffic and the fan doesnt come on. do i have to replace the whole radiator or is it just bits i need to replace, also is it an easy job to do and at what sort of cost.
cheers

It could be blown fuse, if not you probably just need to replace the temperature switch in the radiator. It simply unscrews,it sits on the bottom right hand side of the rad (looking from the front of the car), just drain the coolant first.
-
i will check the fuse tonight, if not will try the temperature switch, how much are these?
-
its worth checking weather the fan spins or not. I found mine was seized and its much easier just to change the fan!!!
-
Yes true. The fans usually make a right racket before seizing up completely. The switch going wrong is quite common.

Remove the connector from the thermoswitch and connect the pins together on the connector using an opened out paper clip, This should spin the fan.
A stop gap measure and one I have used before is to fit a switch on the end of some wires and have it hanging in the window, when the temp gauge shoots right up you turn it on. and when it goes below mid way you turn it off. You can do the same under the bonnet but will need to keep popping it to get to the switch.
I always keep a switch in the glovebox just incase the thermoswitch goes when out and about.
