If anyone is interested I have a place available for a trackday at Castle Coombe tomorrow as a friend of mine had to drop out due to mechanical failure last night. It is a day organised by Richard Armstrong (928), it cost £145 but am open to offers.
I'll be there in my mk2 and i think that there will be a couple of regulars from here (Nick & Mark) there as well. The weather looks good too.
-
I so wanted to go on this but it is my youngest bithday party and I would lose both nuts and probably more if I wasn't there, I've missed her last 2 because of being away.
Whoever goes enjoy it for me!
-
think i would get more abuse than enjoyment if i took the wagon round  :lipsrsealed:
-
I've had an ask around Ralph but had no joy. See you tomorrow
Nick

Ha ha do it chuff, just to see what the MPG readings are afterwards!

another time nick - certainly not with the current rimmage - working til 12 but trying to blag an early finish and head over for a few hours
the mpg would be the same - tracks have speed limits too dont they
-
Nick, thanks for the effort.
It looks like I'll be taking the Ranger Pick-up for a few laps round as well!
Seriously, all offers considered.
Cheers,
-
Gutted I can't make this
Got customers in today, so couldn't take the day off. Hope y'all have fun.
-
We did. Pics and video to follow over the weekend.
5 or 6 red flagged sessions cut down the track time which was a shame but it was still a corker. I went off @ Old Paddock and mowed the lawn for them as well.

what a wicked day! the bumper cam footage looks awesome as well, will upload in a bit

How many?! What were they caused by - that's a lot of flagged sessions!
-
1 Caterham off into the barriers
1 Lotus Elise on fire
1 928 Dropping oil all over the circuit
Can't remember the others, but yeah it was a lot.
Here's my off at Old Paddock, quality is rubish as I saved it wrong but I'm currently re-doing it and will upload a better version tomorrow.

Bl**dy good trackday at Combe on Friday, just got back home after making a weekend away of it.
Nice to meet you again "Horney from the tinternet" and Mark.
Some good photo's from Mike W who is one of my mates so thats why there's a few of me.
Managed to boil the brake fluid after the penultimate session so on the last session they were very spongy. Still very spongy on the way home today. That was brand new Racing Blue fluid before the trackday so might not have bled them thoroughly enough but then I would have thought it would have shown up earlier.
Not looked at my vids yet but will put some up if there's anything interesting.
Horneys car sounds very relaxed in his vids compared to mine but it goes bloody well. Horney what gear were you changing up into at the chequered flag area on the pit straight?

8v vs 16v, you haz more revz than me
That'll be me shifting to 5th around the start/finish line. I got braver as the day went on and hung onto the revs a bit longer but the camera ran out of batteries before then.

That explains the gear shift at the start/finish line then. I can only just get into 5th on a good solo lap just before the braking at Avon Rise but it isn't usually worth the hassle of changing gear, it just starts to hit the limiter for a second in 4th.

020 has shorter ratios than 02a innit.
Was good to meet you paul, your mk3 goes well!
I have a vid of me following you on that brief session where the elise caught fire, will upload in a bit

Thanks for the vid. Those two laps had some serious traffic issues. I thought we were going to go into the back of that 911 at Quarry when he seriously overbraked early and completely outbaked us (he had the instructor onboard as well).
Your car appears to be very quick and you definately seem to know how to drive it.

Cheers mate, a session with dave helped a lot. Would like to go back with some working brakes next time! I was using new racing blue as well so might change back to the motul stuff if you were having braking issues as well.
Loving the fly by vid nick
Who spotted the elise smoking away in the vid then

Never had a problem with the Racing Blue in the past, it was very hot at Combe on Friday and the last sessions were only 10 minutes apart.
Just ordered some Motul RBF 600 to put in instead of the Racing Blue, will see how that goes.
Paul
-
I had no brake problems all day. I can't have been trying hard enough, ha ha.
Nick
-
The motul stuff is good, i only changed cos its easy to see when the new fluid comes through if its blue lol
I think my main problem was the pads. Maybe i didnt bed them in agressively enough and they have glazed. Ill whip em out and sand off the top layer, change the fluid and see what happens. Otherwise its a waste of £50 and wont be using ebc pads ever again
-
What EBC pads were you using?
-
Yellows, which are supposed to be the good ones out of the range
-
I've always been surprised at just how good the 280mm fronts are with OEM discs and pads.
I guess I don't lap terribly quickly, mind....
After many days at Combe I've never boiled fluid or anything like that.
Mark, are you 280 or 256?
Probably the Syncro system helps a lot in evenly distributing the braking grip, as well as the acceleration grip, too - the system works much more on all four wheels, rather than just on the fronts.
EBC generally = badness anyway....
*shrugs*
-
I'm on 256's I think (16v setup right?), Mark is on G60's.
Nick
-
280. Brakes were sh!t before they started to fade, then got progressively worse so it must be the pads.
Either they glazed for whatever reason or ebc have some quality control issues as you seem to get good and bad reviews on all their pads depending who you ask.
I shouldnt have been so tight and got the ferodos again, stick with what works n all that
-
We have 280's as well - with standard pads which seem to work well at the moment. I have heard good reviews of the EBC yellows - as long as you stick to the EBC bedding in procedure.
Tried greens and didn't rate them.
-
Me and Paul both run Mintex 1155's and we both rate them. Next time I see you with the Golf you'll have to take it out for a go and see what you think. They're the best pads I've ever used.
Nick
-
Yes the Mintex 1155's are very good pads and I have been very impressed by them over the last 2 1/2 years. Also been previously impressed by the Racing Blue fluid but not sure why the pedal went spongy at the end of last Friday. I've had the brakes smoking before and the wheels were so hot that the paint went soft and started peeling off.
Probably my fault as I had just changed the fluid and changed the short flexible brake lines in the middle of the system, but surprised it took all day to before the problem occured. Had a quick look earlier today and no visible leaks.
Going to put the Motul stuff in now anyway.
I've not had good experiences with the EBC green or red pads on other cars and when you tell them about it they just seem to advise getting the next colour up.
Finally got some lightweight wheels which should be arriving tomorrow.
Had a quick look at the vids earlier, can anyone recommend some decent video editing software because windows movie maker takes too long.
Cheers

How much lighter than the standard ones were yours?
Thanks for the vid editing info

well +9kg each for Sebrings to 6.6kg for the Team Dynamics.
I think the SEAT 5-spokers are about 8kg
The tactile difference is huge.

Thanks. The differance in weight with R888's on is about 2.5kgs each over the standard ones with normal road tyres. Just wanted to make sure that this would make a noticeable differance.
I have read that each kg off of the wheels and tyres equates to 10 or 20 kgs off of body weight, but then you can also read a lot of crap on the internet.
Cheers

i've never had brake problems on any of my syncros once 280's were fitted, don't think i'm driveing that slowly or beeing that nice to the brakes
i went to the ring, did a couple of coomb sessions and goodwood on 15 euro ebay pads and they were suprisingly good pads ( had other with me spare but chouldn't be arsed to change them over for a trackday they were fine so they got left on )
think i managed to fade them at bovvy

some cool vids and pics there u all got me sh\'t in my self about brakes now lol doin my first trackday on saturday and it only has standard disks and pads did change the brake fluid tho :lipsrsealed:

Taken straight from the EBC site:
Bedding in when the red EBC surface coating (marked on the pads as Brake In) is applied.
Best procedure is to drive gently avoiding harsh braking unless in an emergency for first 100 miles. In the second 100 miles (up to 200) you can use gently increasing brake pressures when using the brakes.
Only after 200 miles urban driving (not 200 miles on a freeway where brakes are almost unused) should you attempt to apply heavy load and heat to the brakes. To do this final bedding on a QUIET ROAD in safe traffic apply the brakes and slow from 60 to 10 MPH five times in a row. Then drive slowly for a few minutes if safe to do so to allow the brakes to cool. Try to avoid coming to a rest whilst the brakes are heated.
A smell may be noticed from the warm brakes, this is normal. Repeat this procedure a second time after the brakes have TOTALLY cooled down. EBC pads get better with miles. Even after this bed in procedure it can take up to 1500 miles before the pads are at their best. In the meantime the pads will be good and safe but true potential not realised. EBC makes performance pads that last, they do not bed in within 5 minutes driving. Noises will be more likely during the first 1000-1500 miles use whilst this chemical bedding takes place.
NEVER attempt to sand or scotchbrite brake pads to assist it bedding in or noise reduction, this will only make things worse by taking the pads "Off-Flat" and require hundreds of miles driving to seat them again during which time the brakes will feel very dull. The only way to seat pads is against the rotor they will be used on and by following our bedding recommendation.
Bedding in for trackday or race use …
We remind you there is NO WARRANTY on any EBC product for race use due to the very varying conditions that can be seen. However, care bedding pads in and monitoring wear will get the best from our products.
Most EBC pads including Yellow range pads now have the brake in coating. If possible and using a street based car, fit the pads before the race use and bed in as above for street use. Try to get 200-300 miles urban driving on the pads before racing them. If this is NOT possible and you fit at the track bed like this.
Drive two laps steadily applying the brakes every few seconds and then coast for a full lap without any unnecessary braking to allow pads and rotors to cool down. Drive a third lap applying the brakes slightly harder each time and again drive a cooldown lap. Do NOT pull up and park the car with the brakes red hot, try to let them cool as much as possible before coming to a rest. It is also important to understand that the pads must be geometrically matched to the rotor (flat and parallel) before they will bed in chemically. If you do the above bed in and get violent fade first use you MUST repeat the bedding procedure. We get lots of new customers calling in saying my brakes have faded and when they send a digital the pad is only touching on 70-80% of its surface area. Fade early in a pads life is almost a good thing. It is called GREEN fade and will disappear so if you suffer Green fade (you will notice this by smell), you are on the right path and this is not a negative. If you are getting fade after 20 laps and the pads are part worn, then something else needs looking into such as material choice, bleeding of the system, driving style etc …
-
blimey!
i must be on the 'green fade' procedure at the moment then
-

Standard discs and pads of OEM quality should be fine. Make sure you drive for the last lap slower to allow them to cool down a bit if there isn't a cool down lap. Some places like airfield days have an are for you to run the car slowly after you come off track.
Don't sit still with your foot on the brake pedal after you stop and don't apply the handbrake, leave the car in gear if you are on a slope and you'll be fine.

I'm glad you had time to think
He was lucky my brakes managed to stop me in time. They were very spongy on that session. At least I think I've found the problem. The front discs are worn into deep ridges / grooves across the whole surface and the pads are the same.
New discs, pads and fluid on the cards for tomorrow if the discs arrive in time.
Bit annoying because the pads are only half worn.
And the discs are only 2 years old with about 20 trackdays on them  I suppose I've had my moneys worth.
