As I said on here the other day, I have a problem with the car where there's a weird noise that increases in pitch and volume as speed increases.
It also steers wherever it wants to whilst accelerating...
There's no play when the car is jacked up and the wheel is being shook, however, I did notice that the drivers side wheel was turning even when in first gear.
Here are some pics of the area:

This is the other side:

And here's a little piccy of the damage caused by some useless twit in a 4xfarse:

Any help is greatly appreciated as I'm actually considering scrapping the old boy now and buying a 1999 one that's on fleabay at the mo.

Looking at that top picture - I've just noticed some crap leaking from the CV arm...
What's that?
Looks like it's kinda bent too...
-
The wheel turning is normal due to friction in the gearbox

Doesn't do it on the passenger side...
The drivers side one goes all the way round quite happily.
So maybe it's the passenger side that's wrong.
-
Normal due to the differential.
There is no issue.
-
What about the weird noise and the steers where it wants to nature of the car?
I'll take it out for a spin later and make a video of the noise.
-
i'm going with knackered wheel bearing or bent drive shaft
-
Did you fit the new parts yourself? When I bought mine it did this, and it turned out that when the old owner had some work done the mechanic has left out a small screw on the wishbone which caused the steering to sometimes jerk sideways while accelerating.
Wouldn't explain the noise though :P
-
I would guess your steering issue is tracking or camber.

I had the wishbones done a little while ago by possibly the worst garage ever.
That might be it... it was since then that the problem happened.
I've changed the bearing on that side twice.
How did you sort out your wishbone problem?
-
I would check the wheel hub and the camber (camber being out can make the car pull oddly...and as you've changed bearing twice i would also guess the hub is worn? my old gti went through 3 bearing in a couple of years but had no play)
-
I'll have to check the hub...
How would I sort out the camber angle? It's that that's off I think...
The inside 3 inches of tire wear off so ridiculously quick.
You can feel the wheel straightening itself up as you go round corners too.

I thought I'd post a video so you could hear the noise, it's loudest in the middle when I'm on the motorway.

That's the wheel bearing! Water has got into it and corroded the polished surfaces which makes it rough, hence the rumble/drone. You will not detect this by jacking up and trying to move the wheel until the corrosion becomes seriously advanced. Turning left or right loads or unloads the affected bearing.
-
Yes that defo sounds like the wear bearing to me :)
-
So... If it's the unloading of weight does that mean that it's the offside bearing that's gone?
Or would the noise stop as weight is applied rather than removed?
