Thats a actually a good point you've kind of made. As the GTD is quicker, I wonder why he didnt drive that instead and got the slower GTI ?

I got the magazine today .. well worth buying if you like hot hatches

They did some night shots in the tunnels around Leeds Inner Ring Road too !

The GTi and Golf R both get good reviews ... the Scirocco R slightly less good IMHO

The winner of the hill climb is not surprisingly the £50,000 Subaru Cosworth

The winner of the whole test is ..... EDIT.....    (don't want to spoil it for you but it was'nt a GTD, sorry Steve30!)

Jonny: Do tell please.
My guesses: The Ford RS500 or the Renaultsport 250? :undecided:

Since it was you who asked, it was the clio 200 cup that won the test but was not the quickest.

Thanks Snoops.
So Evo Mag and TopGear are in agreement.
I drove the Cleo 200 and the Ford RS before settling on the VW GTi. Yes, the Cleo was an absolutely brilliant drive but, oh so low rent inside, had only 3 doors and was a Renault afterall! RS again only 3 doors, too chav looking and a Ford afterall! Cleo better then RS IMO. Renaultsport Megane 250 just plain ugly, with terrible visibiliy and I did'nt bother to drive it!.

Guys I have the mag too.

The clio is a worthy winner I reckon. I was quite pleased to see a 16k hatch back (without a turbo) do so well in our current climate of huge turbo'd 25k+ hatches.

I reckon however that a GTD should have been included. It would have been interesting to see how it compares. Certainly the mid range punch would have worked well on the test course.

My favourite however out this group was the 500 Abarth. Second to that was the Clio. The Ibiza and the Polo I reckon have lost the plot a bit by trying to be too grown up with the 7 speed DSG's.

A golf GTI suits a DSG more because it is more a cruiser... a small nippy hot hatch... think manual is best in that case guys.

But hey this is just my input... so don't take any heed

Yeah that'll be the reason you f**kin clownshoe, because its fair to test a Golf GTI with nearly 210bhp against an RS500 at 350bhp and a Sub Cosworth at nearly 400bhp isnt it ?

Where the f**k did I put that w4nker smilie now.

Also one might consider the Polo GTI and the Seat had DSG, so testing a Golf variant with DSG would still have been fair...

Why are things always so simple...

The Stig is driving a GTI because the title is:

"Massive Hot Hatch Mega Test"

This does not leave room for a GTD that is all there is to it.

I agree. The GTD is without doubt being saved for the supercar test later in the year.

You are right   .....the test is being saved however you are wrong concerning the title

Have patience and the GTD will be surprisingly economical in....

"Massive Family Hatch Mega Test"

They did make some intersting coments when they did a two page bit on 'the battle of the dubs' the VW models in the test Scirocco R, Golf R, Golf GTI.
"But when it comes down to it, the car every vehicle here was trying to beat, the one we all owe a debt of gratitude to for continuously pushing the brand, is the GTI. It's the best all-rounder among our hot hatches"
It was also interesting they did not like the ACC of the scirocco R and much prefered the normal suspension of the golf R and Golf GTI.
I also thought the coment about the mk1 to mk6 was funny. "The current golf, meenwhile, is the size of the garage the first golf use to park in."

With the potholes, ditches, rubbish surfaces, sleeping policeman etc etc etc ad infinitum, ACC in 'comfort' mode is a godsend. In 'normal' mode, in such conditions, I would lose the will to live.
ACC with 18" wheels is a must for real world driving. IMVHO.
Or,
Stay with standard 17", lose a bit on the looks, save on speccing 18" wheels, save on the ACC  and hope to get a better ride. I doubt it. Why? Because I did the 'try before you buy' thing!

Oh, I nearly forgot. 'Comfort' mode saves the car from developing more rattles!

I have not found any difference in the ride on 17" or 18". In fact I feel the car rides slightly more planted on the 18".

I was so used to my BMW that the ACC sport mode is comfort to me so most of the time I have it in sport.

I found I got steering kickback and wheel juddering type feel through the steeringwheel on the 18s on some country roads. It made me rule out the 19s. I do quite fancy a set of 18s in that smoked silver look redRobins were in though.

Another quote i like
"The GTI can be had with adaptive damping and a DSG transmission, but our car did without. No loss."

Im guessing the GTD was not included for a few reasons but maybe because, Its not rated as high as the ones that were included as the Topgear score in the back of the magazine shows. 12/20 for the GTD and 16/20 for the GTI.
