Hi just been looking through posts for what oil to use and have seen it depends on what service intervals are how do i know if mines fixed or longlife? was looking at using this oil casrol Edge Turbo Diesel 5W-40?

What engine is it? e.g 110 or 130....

130! 53 plate

So its a PD....You need to be very careful with the oil you put in. The cams can wear out and cause about £1k worth of dammage.
I would keep to VW Platinum PD oil to be safe.
With regards to what service plan is on. It should be marked up on the service book. On the ticked box it has a "Longlife" option.

Have found two recipts that say something about a longlife service just wondered what oil as it needs topping up abit?

i'd get an oil change rather then topping it up..dont cost that much and you got peace of mind that its done.
-
didnt VW ditch longlife services and went back to fixed?
-
service is due in 1500 miles it tells me? so was going to wait till then and was going to top it up. has the code qg1 on it which is apparently longlife so guess the oil will be 5w-30?

QG1 is Quantum Gold 1 that is a PD spec oil.
When buying an oil you need to make sure it meets the VW 505 01 specification. It should have this on the container.

its in the optional extras and pr numbers page in service book found a site where u put all the codes in and it tells you what they mean and it says qg1=service interval prolongation!!!

look in the service history for how often the car has been serviced as am sure vw dropped the longlife services on PD engines
