Title: Xenon H.I.D Lights
Post by: IBD4vid on 18 June 2010, 02:29
hi if i have posted this in the wrong section sorry :(

I have a mk5 golf gti rep and it has a xenon hid conversion on there the only problem is that sometimes it plays up. when u turn it on the drivers light will come on then u flick back to side light and try again after a few tries both lights will light up. ( at time to time u will turn it on and drivers comes on then go to sidelights and back to main and the passengers side lights up but drivers doesn't.)

if anyone can help fix this or know why this is happening please let me know

cheers in advance

Sounds like the switch isn't making properly rather than a problem with the HID themselves.

I wouldn't know where to start with regards to replacing it.

You need an HID relay kit, it provides the HIDs with a 12V source from the battery rather than pulling it from the headlight switch. - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/High-intensity-Discharge-Lamp-HID-Relay-Harness-H4-/280519252098?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4150401882

I had the same problem with mine bought this and worked no problem.

As said previously, a relay kit should
sort your problem out mate

I've never fitted one mate but I'd imagine you would get instructions with it. I also think off hand the mk5 headlamps are H7 bulbs rather than H4 but I may be wrong

Original headlight units are H7. Aftermarket ones can vary.

Was me Alan yeah.

You should have something like this-

This is what should be connected to where:

1. Connect to left ballast input

2. Connect to right ballast input

3. Connect to the positive + side of your battery.

4. Connect to the negative - side of your battery or a any good solid ground

5. Connect to your car's stock headlight power cable, either

6. Just a relay. Tuck this out of the way, put some electrical tape on it to protect it from the weather. Mine got too wet and failed.

How it works:
The headlight power connector (5) powers the relay (6) which provides power directly from the battery (3 & 4) through a fuse (7) to the hid ballasts (1 & 2).
