Title: buying a golf need advice

hi there all! im new to the site as i dont own a golf yet but by the new year i hopefully should. right well ive seen a golf 1.6 on an s reg for ?2500 which isnt bad but the mileage is high at 165k and just had new cambelt tensioners service etc. i dont know much about golf so need advice whether to stay clear as mileage or whether its worth it ? any help or comments apreciated

its about the price you'd expect to pay, but the car is about to come to the end of its life, if thats your budget i'd go for a mk3, or a very very tidy mk2 gti !

im only 18 so cant get insured on a gti yet, so you reckon the car hasnt got long left on that mileage ?

I agree with toph, mileage is way way way too high for a car of that age, you are probably buying some serious trouble over the next twelve months if you buy it. I suppose it's up to you at the end of the day but I personally would look around for something else (golf related of course  :grin:)  :smiley:

Just read it's best to avoid mk4's built in Belgium & South Africa how can i check where it was made ? i think this will allready have been asked but can't find it,so if it has sorry.

I have owned mk2s and a mk4 and would definitely recommend a mk2 for that sort of money.  Cant comment on the mk3 as a owner but you could pick up a better older golf for that sort of money. 

You would get more fun and performance out of a mk2 1.8 mk2 Driver than the equivalent mk4, least till you can afford the mk5 1.8T  :smiley:
