UPDATE: Car now up for sale/Part EX    Please PM me if interested

Thanks JV!

Right, I picked up a P reg GTI Colour Concept last Thursday.

The car has a FSH and a huge stack of receipts for all work done on it (except the mysterious respray on the near side, that has faded badly over the years)

In March it had a refurbish gear box, new clutch, cam-belt, water pump etc which cost £500, so I think I got a pretty good deal, as the car drives and sounds great.

As you'll see below, most of the work is going to be on the bodywork.

Quite stupidly, I didn't really get any photos of the car before I did anything to it, but here we go.

Heres a few terrible photos of the car before I really did anything to it, just a quick rinse.

Front grill/valance removed as it in very bad condition, photos in a future post

This side of the cars in pretty good condition, few rust bubbles on the lower part, which im getting sorted when the left side is resprayed.

Panel behind the Golf badge is dented in, getting sorted along with the paint. Have some new plates which i'll put on when its time.

Tracking was all to pot and the way the front tyres are worn suggest they may be a bigger problem. Luckily it was just neglected tracking and this is all sorted. I have new Toyo tyres which ill get fitted when I've finished the alloy refurb.

I removed all the seats except the drivers seat to clean up.

The seats are filthy, but in excellent condition considering the cars age.

Here is a little before and after of the passengers seat. I used warm soapy water, followed by Auto Glym leather cleaner and Auto Glym leather balm.

All other seats came up just as well, but 2 photos are enough!

While the seats are out I decided to give the carpet (and under the carpet) a good hover and remove the mini disc player (lol) and CD changer. I may run some speaker cable while they are out if I get hold of some in time.

Right, I was going to just buy a new grill but all I could find on eBay were debadged ones, so I decided to try cleaning it up.

Firstly I tried taking a heat gun to it, but after about 5 mins the gun broke, and hardly anything was achieved.

So I just decided to take an angle grinder to it, and it worked a treat.

I should have used a finer sanding disk, but the damage was done, so I needed a lot of filler.

After some sanding and priming, its all ready for spraying. Plastic parts were very easy to prep

Alloys were in surprisingly good condition, with just some corrosion where the weights were and slight curbing.

All prepped ready for priming.

Optimus Primed

Finished wheel with new Toyo tyres fitted.

Brought some good quality rubber centre cap stickers to bring them back to life.
EDIT: They seem to be not so 'good quality' as they are coming loose already, will try something a bit more industrial to hold them on asap.

The bulk of time and more importantly money will/has been spent sorting out the left side of the car. The main issue is the big rust patch on the door, and the damage around the handle from an attempted break in years ago.

All this is getting sorted next week when the painting gets done.

Removed the body kit all round with only breaking1 or 2 clips. I'm debating whether to spray them up black along with the black strip on the bumper, or just put them back on.

Rust patches sanded down, and treating them soon. I could only get hold of 2 5 stud wheels with tyres, so can only refurb 2 alloys at a time.

This evening I washed the outside, and gave it a gentle T-Cut, on all the areas that are not going to be sprayed so the guy can get a good colour match.

Didn't get much done today.

Started cleaning and spraying up some of the black trim. I brought some special trim spray that smells like toxic glue, so I assume it melts itself on a bit. Seems to look good so far though. Doesn't need to much to give a good finish.

The front of the sill has taken a whack in the past, which has resulted in this bit bending out, which has gone rusty, and means the side skirt doesn't fit properly.

Cleaned all the crap out from behind and welded it up nicely.

Removed the back bumper for easy spraying and to have a look to see if there was any rust. Just a little surface rust which was grinded down and treated

Still waiting to work out the best way to pop the dent out behind the GTI badge, might just have a word with the bodywork guy, and let him sort it.

Have been busy at work this week, so havent had time to update the thread, but have been working on the car.

Firstly I tried to tackle the damage to the door handle.

I removing the door card, to see if I could get to it from inside, but I couldn't, so that was a waste of time.

I did my best to try and pull it back out from the outside, but was really hard not to bend and damage the panel below . Also the metal has been stretched so its not looking too good. I'll see what the bodywork guy can do with it. Fill it and spray over I imagine. Ill report back on this after its been sprayed.

I decided to remove as much as I could to make the spraying easy, while trying to keep the car road legal.

I manged to separate the black from the yellow on the bumpers so gave them a good clean, and a sanding where needed.

Spraying delayed further. Getting a little impatient now. If its not done by end of next week, I think i'll look elsewhere.

Might strip the front bumper down a little more while im waiting

Update.

Base coat of car has been done. Top coat being done tomorrow.

Here is the photo text to me by the guy doing it. It looks very creamy in this photo, but I've been assured its just the photo.

Whole car has been sprayed except the roof, for quite a few £££££

Received the car back from the spray guy today. I am astonished at how amazing it looks, even in yellow. The finish is amazing, I'm so pleased. Will be reattaching the trim when the paint hardens, but hers a few photos with comparisons to what they were like before.
