I know its cheap but just bought 1 of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1091-2-din-7-Dash-Car-DVD-Player-IPOD-Bluetooth-MP3-/150455408334?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Audio_TV_Electronics_In_Car_Entertainment_GPS_In_Car_Audio_Players_PP&hash=item2307d756ce
I don't think it comes with a cage is it vital to have one?
Also anything else i will need for it to work will it fit straight in with current cables?
Another also  is there any step by step guides on removing the standard tape player from mk4 golf to double din preferbly using lots of images
-
might be cheap but looks sweet let us know what it like m8 i might get 1
-
Think you might need thin metal keys (like a hacksaw blade) to remove the headunit.
Without the cage the unit may not sit well in the aperture. A decent ICS shop should have a universal cage.
-
Do you think any double din cage will work?
Which 1 do you lot recommend

It looks even better in person will get back to you soon as I have fitted it.

The second one (ebay item) is what you need. I've used something similar in the past and works fine.
The Halfrauds item is a trim.
-
So Halfrauds no good  had 1 just down the road! well will order the Ebay 1 now hopefully doesn't take to long.

Exactly, also only paid 80 brand new as it was an unwanted gift still got all the packaging intact

Now I have it all working I can give you a quick review..
When you buy the unit you also need to buy a cage (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Universal-Double-Din-Cage-Kit-182x103mm-Radio-Headunit_W0QQitemZ260481948906QQcmdZViewItem?rvr_id=&rvr_id=&cguid=abb156e91270a0aad1e6fe96fed52620#ht_2468wt_1138) and iso plug bit like this but ask for the vw 1 (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_182927_langId_-1_categoryId_165626) after that its a pretty straight forward job plug the new cables from halfruads then plug the double din into them job done.
Must also say, when the screen is connected it sticks out an inch but I'm going to attempt some diy and cut the plastic strip out at the back which supported the previous stereo so I can push the system back an inch

It has a detachable screen so as you can see in the 3rd picture it is nice without the screen but when screen it on it sits out

I have similar ebay unit, the halfords plate will need a huge trim think in depth it ended up being only 1.5inches deep at the most I just did it quickly with angle grinder. Put in a screw in the side so the plate no longer moves and then clipped it into the centre dash.
Also remember to switch the red and yellow cable round (if I remember correctly). Also ground the handbrake cable, either to the chassis of the double din or to one of the earths on the ISO plug thing.
On my unit I had another problem, I needed aeriel adapter and when the arial was in, it would not allow the unit to sit back fully as the aeriel would hit the middle cross section of the cage in the centre console, so I had to take the dash and centre console somewhat apart. Remove the huge box the double din units sits in and cut the centre cross bit out (right at the back, behind where the double din would sit). This allowed the unit to go fully back. The cross section of the cage in the centre console, it just seem to be a support/strengthening point to the cage but its not needed and theres a good 3 inches of space behind it for additional cables etc... if you need it.
TV system is not worth installing, as a small aeriel will not work you will need a proper kit (which are quite big and go under your roof carpet, usually £100+ just for the kit), and crimp the right fixing on, too much hassle and no real point unless you really want it.
If your unit has GPS on it, a good point to fix GPS too is, open the cover on the passengers side to where the glove box is, there you can place the GPS module ontop of the glovebox mould, or if magnetic, attatch it too ths metal fixings, which is where my additional fusebox and GPS module are.
As for GPS software I would recommend iGo8 it works very quickly and has an autodetect setting to work out the com-port and buad rate of the module, plus tomtom software is very tricky to get to work on these as the settings are unknown and alot of other complicatons with the whole WinCe system.
End result should be this:

(should stick out a tad, with the clip on frame to neaten it off)

(using iGo8's speedo and altituden)
Unit is great, cheap chinese unit was about £180 not had a problem at all in the 6months of having it.
-
Thats nice! My trim is about 1mm to small  also you havent got a detachable screen, how do you sleep at night?
-
Not had anyproblems with a non detatching screen, its always in quite secure area's like Courts, big shopping centre car parks with barriers and security, plus its on my drive or on a drive every other time.
Other good new is, mine is cliped and wedged so hard that I would like to seer anyone try and attempt to get it out, I will definetly hear them swearing a mile away. Then there is plan B - my automatic air-rifle with 8 rounds

i love ur setup banbury but it would look mustard if it were flush fittin

Thanks, overall I spent around £230 for parts+unit and a weekend to do it all, not bad IMO. Initially I was going to buy a named brand in Florida but prices where just ridiculous for a unit with GPS over there and in the UK, so I opted for the cheap chinese units which I looked into and I really can't fualt them except for the little extra effort you need to put in to fit them.
Plus there flexible as you can run whatever GPS software you like, such as tomtom, iGO etc... I like iGO just hate how its postcode system does not narrow it down to the individual road like the tomtom does. Plus I have been through two tomtom units in the space of 2 years costing me the entire price of the double din unit. Cant fualt it, highly recommend it people.
Let me know if you hit any problems BanburyCo as well as some finished product pictures.

Just need to find a new trim and cut that bit of plastic preventing unit getting any deeper. Connected the brake cable (pink) to the cage and done the job fine don't see why they make it look so awkward when describing how to bypass the error messages.
-
Cut out the bit of plastic and this is the new look
Still in the process of making a nice beeding for it as the 1 that came with the cage was a few mm to small
