hi
when i start the car from cold it starts but dies straight away (but ok when keep foot on it) it stabilizes its self after a minuet and is fine.
i can hear the valve trying to open (tapping)
and it still taps even after its warm.
i think its something to do with the throttle valve potentiometer its simos management system, 97, agg engine code
ive also just changed the battery
any ideas thanks

I had this problem on one of older golfs a commmon fault with these is the transmission coil. Its the box you plug the coil lead into.
To be honest it could be alot of things.
Have you checked the spark plugs

Another thing it could be is metal thing above and to the rear of where the spark plugs are.
I think its called the idle switch or meter i cant remember now. It could also be your battery on its way out.
