Chaps, it seems that the strange whistling noise i have on my R is originating from the fuel tank. The technician thinks it may be the fuel pump, and there is also what he thought may be a lose feed pipe rattling on the inside. Now, being aware that things are never the same once you start taking them apart and putting them back together i have a couple of questions:
1. If they have to replace the fuel pump where is it located? is it outside of the tank?
2. Will they have to take the tank off? how easy/invasive is this procedure?
I'd rather leave it than have them pull the car to bits...
Please help, i need to take it in tomorrow...

I've not worked on a Golf R yet but i would assume it is the usual setup of the high pressure fuel pump being on the rail in the engine bay and a lift pump/sender unit in the tank which can be accessed under the rear seat bench so no need to remove the tank.

No it will be the fuel pump in the fuel tank.

Yeah.. that's what i said, i know the difference between noises from the fuel rail and the fuel tank

Thanks Topher,
When you say in the tank, i presume you take out the rear seat/lift it up and there is some sort of access panel allowing acces into the tank itself to get to the sender unit???
What are they likely to bugger up in my new car? i'm a bit precious at the mo!!

There may be some spillage so expect a slight whiff of fuel in the cabin, but there really isn't anything they can break. It's the general lack of care taken walking around/working on the cars in the service bays that puts me off using vw dealerships. The job they're on seems to get done fine, they just mess up or put scratches in other things instead

Still not sorted! Fuel pump is quieter now the dealer has replaced it, but the rattles are worse and they haven't fitted the rear seat back properly, a couple of clips are missing!! AND I suspect they have not replaced the sound deadning back as I can hear more road noise in the back than before.
Help guys, I'm furious, and need some advice on what to do/say. If they can't even screw the seat back properly, i'm worried they aren't very good. Are there proper specialists out there that can do warranty work?

You could try a different main dealer. There are some people that work at these places that do give a toss. Its just finding one. I would contact VW customer service and say your not happy with the repair if you get no joy from the dealer service manager or dealer principal.
