I wanted to do the same thing, so I took it to a specialist and they said it wasn't worth the trouble as the speakers weren't particularly bad and the HU would limit the quality no matter how good the speakers.
But if someone has proof that upgrading just the speakers can make a big improvement then I'll go do it anyway.

I take it you dont want to change the HU as its the satnav? Im afraid it is in fact the HU that limits the sound. An aftermarket HU will send more watts to the speakers making them sound better.

VW digital sound processing FTL

As has been said the VW HU is the weak point although the quality of the speakers are poor too. This is why VW use DSP, so they can inhibit certain frquencies at set volumes to stop the speakers blowing.

Hence why my drivers side speaker has blown :D

So if I want to keep the HU, do you think better speakers WILL make a difference? Would I have to replace all 8?

You will get get a smoother sound, but the speakers will still be hobbled with the VW DSP

Rear coaxial.
Gets rid of the nasty tweeters at head height in the rear and puts them with the mid speaker for a better sound arena

They are :(

To be honest I dont think I can stretch that far. Going to take it into audio specialist place down the road from me and see what they think.

If they are too expensive then you could always go for the "energy" range rather than the "hi-energy" range. Each set about £100 notes cheaper
