Searched topics and can't find anything specific to my question.
Decided to get a USB stick in addition to using iPod, SD card and CD's.
So, got an 8GB Sandisk cruzer blade; formatted it FAT32, put a few albums on to try it, music files are MP3, 320kbps arranged in folders, when inserted nothing happens, no error message but media is not recognised. Read manual and can't see anything else in there that I'm missing [apart from a few grey cells]
Anyone know what the problem might be?

i'd suggest to try reformatting it again and just simplify it by putting just one MP3 on there

Are you sure its formatted as FAT32, I found that Xp,VISTA and 7 didnt want to do it and I had to download a free FAT32 formatter utility.

Yeah, definitely FAT32 - done it twice already

I assume it does actually detect the USB stick when plugged in and tries the puts up the words initialising on the screen? Does the memory stick have any lights and do they start flashing? Have you tried re-seating the MDI cable in its connector?

That's exactly the same memory stick that I've bought for mine, but I don't get my car for another 3-4 weeks. Hope you get it sorted before then!

All that money you paid for the car and the memory stick doesn't work, shocking!!

Well I use a 2GB USB flash drive on my RCD310. WinXP will only format these at FAT32 so that ins't a problem. The MDI is supposed to read Windows Media Playlists *.wpl and other formats. I have 285 mp3's in 16 different artist folders and I made a wpl to list them. When I first inserted it into the MDI lead I just pressed the MDI button on the set and it all played perfectly. I have it set to MIX FLD to mix all tracks.
Now this as worked great since I've had the car (4 months). I've noticed over the past couple of weeks that the tracks weren't very random, in fact it was stuck on one of the sub folders. I formatted the drive again and reloads all files and folders and it still gets stuck on one folder. I've removed all folders and put all the mp3's on the root and removed the wpl now they all play randomly.

I have my music in A to Z folders due to the 1000 folder limit in the root, one mp3 in the root as my 500gig drive doesnt resume, really annoying. Pressing mix as soon as it starts seems to just randomly play the first folders sub folders. It might be that I have to change to one root folder with A-Z inside to see if that cures it, playlist might be interesting as its really annoying its not random, is there any simple way to put all your music in one playlist and just stick that in the root?

When I had my Scirocco, there was issues with the RCD510's not recognising memory sticks over 4 or 6Gb. I wonder if that is still the issue..

Im running an 8 on an RCD310 without any trouble. :undecided:

Its easier on your main drive. Just select the files in any folder, right-click on them and select Add to Windows Media Player list. While media player is running do exactly the same on all files in the sub folders. Once they are all added you can drag then up and down to randomise your own list then File\Save Now Playing List and give it a filename, I just use Audio.wpl and put that file on the drive root.

No, it doesn't detect the memory stick and no message is displayed, it just carries on as though there's nothing connected to the media port, that's the strange thing. The stick doesn't have a light to indicate activity. I've ensured the MDI cable is properly seated.
Going to try putting some music files in the root and see if it recognises them.

Sounds more like the MDI isnt working at all, no life from the headunit is not good, it should at least state "initialising" when trying to use it.

My iPod Nano works fine [apart from the stutter at start of some tracks when the title changes just after the track has started, which appears to be a generic fault] I've tried an old 256MB MP3 player and that works as well, so there's nothing wrong with the MDI or the USB connector cable.
Must be to do with the way I've put the files on the drive, going to try it with some MP3's in the root [no folders], if that works will then try adding some playlists from Windows Media Player. Incidentally, I put the files on the USB stick in the same way as I have on my SD card and that works fine, so it must to do with the way the unit accesses the USB drive.
Problem is I don't seem to find the time.
