Title: MOT Failure - Urgent advice needed - MK 4 Golf GTI

Well my lovely Mk 4 failed its MOT this morning and I wondred if anyone has any ides about how much its going to cost to fix....Failed on= Nearside (steering rack and pinion) Ball joint has excessive play.


HELP!

Ball joint isnt expensive or hard to replace.

Is it something that I can fix myself?
So it doesn't need a new steering rack then?

You can replace the ball joint without the steering rack.

Ive never done one myself but my gf changed one on her car yesterday morning and it didnt take long.

Genuine part from VW is about 30 quid from memory, a garage will charge 1 hour labour most likely.. but it's not a tough DIY job if you have basic tools and a good jack/axle stands.

Just amke sure you get your tracking re done once its fitted, so might be worth getting it done at a garage, as you will be looking at £25 to get the tracking done, but you might be able to find somewhere that will do it all for a decent price.
