We have a Mk V GTi which unfortunately done very few miles in the last year....1500 odd. We live in London and it's really my wife's car so only gets used for short journeys (we have an X5 when we are traveling as a family with kids and dog). The car was serviced 12 months ago by a VW dealer with the next service due in 24 months or 20,000. 12 months and 1500 miles later the service indicator has come on, I have rung the local dealer and they say that because the car has done so many short journeys it may have triggered the need for a service ?
Does that sound right ? I'm all for maintaining cars properly and always get the oil changed very early when I buy a new car but a service every 1500 miles seems excessive!

might not be the oil tho mate, could need new brake fluid, that should be changed every 2 years.

hi mate I'm a qualified vw tech and it sounds as though when it was in for it's last service, the mechanic has reset the service light back to time and distance, ie. 12months or 10,000miles whichever comes first. At that service, the light should have been reset to longlife ie. 24months or 20,000miles whichever comes first. Hope that helps

Thanks. I thought it might be something like that. Do you think given the kind of motoring it does it shopuld be serviced every 12 months ?

Meant to say, you will need to go to vw and explain what has happened and get them to reset it for another year, then at it's next service, the light will need reset back to longlife servicing which can be done through the dash panel in guided functions of vagcom

I would just leave it at time and distance if your not doing much mileage in it mate, a basic oil and filter plus pollen filter change every year will be fine. Pollen filter is usually changed every second year and air filter every 4 years

Why have a car like gti and not drive it???
The car is just protesting at not being driven :grin:
You could take the dog for a warp speed blast up the country on your next trip away. My dogs love the gti. Let the wife take the X5 and the kids :evil:

Air filter every 4 years - wow, I would have thought it would be at most every 2 years :S

Nope every 40k mate, same with spark plugs. Brake fluid gets done 3years after the car is registered then every 2 years after that, pollen filter gets done every 20k.
We do timing belts at 80k or 4 years whichever comes first. DSG oil and filter changes are carried out at 4 years or 40,000miles whichever comes first

thanks mate lol. I'll definitely stick around. i done my apprenticeship through seat then worked for Audi/ skoda for a year and now been a year at vw. I see a lot of common faults day in day out

It's crazy when you think about it - my other car (i.e porsche 996) get changed annually - surely they couldn't have designed something that keeps itself clean for so long?
Therefore do you think VW over-estimate the life of it's components? I saw in the manual that it's 120k miles before you need to change the cambelt and no timeframe was given (i.e. 120k or 6 years it was just 120k). I know people here have asked VW the question but I wonder how much of that "optimisim" extends to everything else?

Yeah it was around 100k that the cambelt used to get changed at but I think vw started coming across wear on the belts before the 100k was due so they lowered it down to 80k to try cut out the amount of problems and it's then down to the garage to tell the customer this at it's time of service so that the customer then has the final say whether to go ahead and change it or not

If you're covering only 1500 miles/yr, you should be on time and distance servicing. Longlife should only be used if you meet the longlife criteria.
Have a look in the maintenance subforum. Teutonic_tamer has posted a sticky about the servicig regimes.

Mine has just turned 4 years old but has only 26k on it.
What about the oil and filter in the DSG,is it ok to 5 years?

hi mate I meant to put 4 years or 80,000miles for timing belt changes whichever comes first.
A dsg oil and filter change should be carried out 4 years or 40,000miles whichever comes first.
In your situation, I'd personally advise changing both regardless of the low mileage but it's entirely your choice. If you were close enough to me I'd have done them for you on the side

haha your not wrong there, the gti is murder for getting enough room. Once the engine mount is off though and you put an engine brace across it or jack under the car it's not the worst in the world to do. It's easy to say that I suppose when you have done a few.

I have a 140 gt tdi mate, what they like on them?
Still far too complicated I imagine!

Far easier than the gti mate. The diesel engines are actually great for changing the belts on, much more room on them. 2.5-3 hours and you can have the belt changed on them

Great to see a trained VW tech on here, fingers crossed for some sound advice.
I hope no one minds me slightly stealing the thread here, but I just want to get some advice.
I brought my GTI from a main dealer at the end of November. It is a 05 reg and has done 51k miles. I had the DSG oil and filter change done by a different dealer closer to home, once I found out it hadn’t been done. The dealer I brought it from said it had, so I made them reimburse me for the oil and filter change, wont let them mug me off like that ha ha!
Anyway I have 2 questions.
First is, would or should the VW dealer I brought it from have performed a service before I brought the car? I think they are meant to perform a check but I don’t know if they actually give two hoots and just tick the boxes to say they have. I only say that because I just had to get my MOT done and the rear tyres needed replacing. I have not done many miles on them to be honest, and I thought the tyres would have been one of the things the dealer should check.
Second is, I mainly use the GTI for travelling to the train station and back, and then to the girlfriends house. It is mainly town driving and I probably do about 12 or so miles a day, so what sort of service plan should I be looking at? (I have just changed the pollen filter myself to try and cure an air con smell problem I was having, and I have a piper cross panel air filter fitted that came with the carbon fibre air intake I brought. I also only feed it with Shell V power juice.)

Hi mate first of all, I'd more than likely every used car should be at least checked prior to leaving the premises to a new customer. Brakes, gyres wiper blades etc all come under the basics that should be checked so I'd maybe have looked into that further if it failed it's mot on gyres if you had not long bought the car.
Secondly, approx 12-15 miles a day is approx 400-500 miles per month which works out roughly anything upto 6000 a year. I'd recommend time and distance servicing for you. Service it once a year or 10,000miles whichever comes first
