Title: In defence of the Golf R!
Post by: am1w on 11 June 2010, 13:18
I thought long and hard before posting this on the GTi forum.

On Wednesday I saw the White Golf R DSG 3 Door with Gloss 19" Tally wheels SteveP drove.

It really looked the business. The standard seats looked wonderful, the massive twin exhausts were eye openers for their size and they looked even more fabulous by being in close proximity to each other, the LED driving lights set in the bumper were eye candy and the even lower ride height made the whole car look very, very, fast and menacing. Next to it my GTi looked frumpy. The overall effect was of a higher priced premium model.

I really, really, loved it and wish I had one. No doubt. In fact, I saw him drive past me at one stage and I can say this in all honesty, everyone on the street looked at it and turned around as it went by. This does not happen to my GTi, possibly because it is red and 5 door but most probably because it looks a bit ordinary. I have seen 3 door and 5 door white GTis, but a White R shod with Gloss Black 19" Tally wheels is something else! Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous.

PS: Negatives - Very tiny boot and really lousy fuel economy for town driving.

really lousy fuel economy for town driving.

I guess it depends what you're used to!
I get better fuel economy in my R than I did in my GTI ED30... and thats only 1400 on the clock so far, and driving like a looney half the time!!

It's not the looney driving that kills the mpg, but the incredible London Traffic jams where your average mph is approx 5! Nose to bumper for 5 miles out of an 8 mile journey helps one lose the will to live!

But at least thank me for saying such nice but honest things about your make and model!

See to be honest... the R is a great car.

It's and Edition 30 with 4wd instead of all the Ed30 sparkly bits.

But I wanted a GTI... so I bought the GTI. Nothing wrong with an R though

The downside buying an R other than fuel economy is if the weather go pearshape this winter, you can not use snow as an excuse for not turning up for work!

Ive got to agree with amw1, the R is a really nice car and if i had the choice of a GTI or R when i was buying nearly a year ago i would have defo bought the R.

The only thing that put's me off slightly is the price.

But im happy with my GTI and who know's maybe in 12 months or so might look at buying one.

It is a very nice car , and I would love to have one but its the price=35k for decent spec

I haven't seen one "in the metal" yet but there's no doubting it's a good looking motor. I'm pushing the boat out for the GTI and just couldn't justify the extra expense of an "R"

I would like the R's 4WD for the extra traction it gives and the extra power (if I didn't have a remap), but I honestly prefer the looks of the GTI. If you get the right colour/wheel combination, I think it looks racy and classy, whereas the R 'only' looks racy.

Thanks

I spend most of my daily driving at 10mph stuck in traffic - but then its only 15-20 minutes each way.
I get about 20 miles extra in a tank than I did in my ED30.  I'll need to try a motorway drive though and see how that pans out.

I think they both look very classy. The R looks a bit more racy due to its even lower ride height and those wonderful LED running lights. O, and the R is more snow and ice friendly.

However, I totally agree with you regarding wheel choice. I have now come round to the fact that the nicest wheels are those fabulous 19" VWR ones on Ess_Three's and NeilGTi's cars. The 19" do make a visibly positive difference. IMO.

Unfortunately, I won't be getting any as I live in pothhole paradise. The 18" Monza Shadows have just about survived with a couple of near misses - one big one today!

However, two things that please me greatly are that: (a) my GTi will provide better fuel consumption than the R especially in London traffic and (b) my GTi's boot is much more practical and hence more useful.

But I still hanker after an R.
I can dream, can't I?

The R is a fantastic looking car in my eyes and any pictures I have seen of it have all been positives.
However, I saw what looked to me like a car that had had after market chav LED's put on the front of it. I could only see half the car as it was behind another one and they were both going slow as they were coming up to lights. Anyway as I got level with it I realised it was an "R". I couldn't believe it!!!

If I didn't have my parents in the car who i was ferrying home after a long flight, I would have done a U turn and had another look but I was quite disappointed with what I saw!!  Hopefully next time I'll get a proper look. It's amazing, since I've had my golf my kids are now telling me about R32's and edition 30's they have seen on the road!!

I can't see what all the fuss is about

I love the look of the GTI and IMHO the R looks nothing special, there was a red one parked up in the works car park last week and it looked very bland, to be honest I thought it was a basic mk6 until I passed the back end of it and saw the twin tail pipes.  Much prefer the split pipes on the GTI it is somewhat different which I like.

But as said before everyones taste is different (thank goodness) this is just how I feel and is by no means meant as an insult to anyone who owns an R.

Gorgeous car. But at £30k plus extras well into BMW money. And others for that matter. And therein lies the problem.

Just a VW!!!!

If both were the same price everybody would buy an R.
If one comes around at the right price in a year who knows. But im not sinking 33k into a VW :S
Love to see one close up though pm me if you ever make it around Derbyshire or SouthYorkshire one day ill come have a nosey

i still prefer the looks of the GTI over the R - putting the 2 cars next to each other, the GTI will surely look the more 'girly', but i like that in cars, with a few feminine curves here and there, and i am still amazed how the 18 inch Monzas look.

if the GTI could have the 4WD system installed in the R, that would be interesting proposition to me.

I see the R models still get the same hate from the majority of GTI guys. Dont see why really... you get what you pay for. Looks are always subjective anyway.

I quite like the R in Rising Blue Metallic:

To me the posted pics of the white "R" are looking very racey (as the red GTI) but indeed as amw1 indirect claims the white "R" has it in spades.
For points of style (to my taste) both cars score very low...I guess colour and alloys has to be chosen carefully if you want to achieve that.

To make myself clear I would choose an "R" any day of the week.......there is actually no valid reason to my belief to choose a GTI over an "R" since they can look both the same (in a worst case scenario ) but the "R" still will be the better car and is that not the whole point....full stop....

Here's a better look of them

They fit quite neatly into the top "slat" of the front grill IMHO

They also act as the sidelights (in the sidelight setting) and also stay on when the headlights are on.

I would not.

Black wheels whats the in thing with black wheels they went out of fashion in the late 80s early 90s
Not a fan of black wheels whats the point of big black wheels they just look like giant tyres when moving  Black wheels to me look chavy and belong on a nova or corsa. They lower the class of a car and make it look like a cheap chav mobile to me. Not a fan. :lipsrsealed:

Different strokes for different fokes all that counts is that golf R owners like there cars but it does not meen everyone has too or meen everyone wants one as they don't.

Snoops:

I became a pretentious chav last Wednesday. Blame SteveP.

Would I buy black wheels? Probably not. They look much better in reality  and on other people's cars.
How cowardly can one get!

Best wheels are on Neil gti's and Ess_Three's cars.

I have fallen out of love with them too, after looking at a white one with them on at a local dealers (whos also a Volkswagen racing approved dealer) There too wide and so the tyres are stretched. They also looked too big to me. I much prefered the R 19s or the BBS ones. But again different tastes.

Nope. Thought about it but too many potholes and broken roads on the way to work and unlike previous cars that have mostly had big wheels im enjoying not worrying all the time.
