Hi All,
Hope you can help........
My GTI is has started to make a whining noise above 55mph.
Symptoms:
1) Does not happen at standstill revving in neutral (Turbo's ok?)
2) Rises in loudness with increase in speed
3) Could be a bearing?
4) Transmission? (Gulp!)
5) Not climate control related
6) Had two new front tires 6 weeks ago but didn't notice the problem at the time, no rumbling, handles the same - possible source of issue?
Cant explain the noise apart from it is a whine!! Not much help?? lol
Car booked in for a look on Friday but thought you (the experts) might have some idea or have had a similar experience.
Cheers

IMO either bearing or depending on your make of tyre, tyre noise.
-
Bacillus,
thanks for the response........hope its either TBH - not too expensive!!
-
It sounds like a wheel bearing to me to? :undecided:
-
Wheel bearing or worse case diff bearing.
-
If the bearing is going one alloy will be generally hotter than the other after a 10 minute spin in the car. Check whilst wearing some thin gloves or a cloth.
Like Bacillus says, it could also be tyre noise. My R888's sounded like a tractor wheel and gave a regular whining noise, so it could also be that. Again, you could check this out if you could borrow someone else's front alloys/tyres for a short spin. If the sound goes, it is the tyres

Thanks for the answers, appreciated. will update with the diagnosis
A bit off topic............
Nice stats Hurdy!! 380bhp through a DSG, wow, thought it couldn't be done (max torque of 300nm??). How did you do it?
Thinking of doing the Bluefin/Miltech upgrades later this year (C. 240bhp) - think this is enough!!! Then again how much is enough?!!
Cheers again for the help

The dsg box as standard is rated at 350nm. With REVO software file for the DSG it is uprated to take 600nm. I'm running 562nm at the wheels!
I'm also running a stronger diff (quaife) and bearings.

Nice....will send you a PM for advice when the time comes for upgrades.
This is my 7th GTI (2 x Mk1s, 3 x Mk2s, 2 x Mk5s)! could say i'm a bit of an enthusiast!! The DSG is simply awesome IMO
My last Mk2 (8v) was a real Q car spent 1000's under the shell....Brakes, suspension, new electronic Injection, Stage 2 gas flowed head, forged pistons, uprated bottom end, race cam, powerflow custom exhaust.........completely standard outside, just de-badged.........
Want to achieve the same thing with this one, not flash, not mad, just quick!!!
Ideally 260bhp/290nm would be spot on - any initial thoughts?

Just been out for a spin (25mins) and the alloys are all cold?? So based on the above doesn't suggest a bearing issue?

On that basis, then yep

Easily achievable with the K03. Fastest way to bigger power is an engine swap to the ED30/Cupra/S3/TT-S ones. Like mine they tune up over 300bhp VERY easily. Don't get hung up on the torque handling of the DSG, with a K03 you won't get near the real limits of it
-
What make of tyres do you have??
Goodyear - Efficientgrip (??) 225/40R18s on the front................
Your going to tell me these are rubbish arn't you Lol!!!
Hope not at £150 a corner!

Problem resolved........
Noisy near side wheel bearing (early stages), changed (£200) and all sorted
Thanks for the advice

Maybe why the alloys weren't getting hot then
Glad it is resolved

Just to correct Hurdy's figure, the DSG it is uprated to take 500Nm and not 600Nm.
From Revo, "The torque limit built into the factory software has been increased to 500Nm. NOTE: these limits are not hardware limits, but built in software limits from the factory. As with all our software, our DSG software operates within the safety tolerances set by the factory".

Will be getting a boring motorway mile muncher in the near future..............so what to upgrade first GTI?
1) Bluefin or ST3 (Plenty of posts for and against - whats your take on the subject as I want something I can control?)
2) Miltek Full system?
3) Upgraded induction kit - thoughts?
4) Suspension upgrade and brakes (Is the standard spec enough to handle C.250bhp?)
5) K03 Turbo - How much?
As I said previously don't want a total lunatic just a bit more usable power (and perhaps get rid of the annoying DSG profile of dropping down to 6th at every opportunity!!!)
Of course outside to be completely standard!!

Your DSG map maybe 500nm Bacillus
