Started the car today and it sounds really rough, can feel it too, opened the bonnet and the engine is noticeably wobbling around. Could it be the timing belt has slipped or something?

Get it hooked up to a code reader and see if anything shows up there.

ok so when I get the codes I post them here and someone can tell me what they mean?

The manual that comes with gives a short description of each code or you could search here for the code or Google it on Ross Tech.

Would either of those be costly?
I tried driving it again just now and it is less bad but still noticeable.

maf or coilpack i think............ will do some logs on maf later with vagcom to check it out....

local motor factor. Poss flea bay but its better to spend that bit extra and get Genuine parts.

either a vw dealer or tps get oem vw parts may pay a little more but there the best parts to fit :wink:

I always think it is best to replace all the coil packs at once too - again, makes it a bit pricier, but will help eradicate any weak spots for the future.

Code reader arrived this morning, here's the results:
1) Engine - No Codes, although it does flash something very quickly before saying no codes, cant read it's too fast
2) A/T - keeps saying "Link Error" with this one for some reason, quite annoying.
3) SRS - Code: 00532 01/01
4) ABS - No Codes
The booklet says the SRS code means: Transmission control module relay-supply voltage (B+) malfunction low battery or bad ground
Supply Voltage (B+)
So is that saying there's a battery problem? That wont be what's causing the engine problem will it?

Hmm, pain in the ass if it's a wiring thing I'm not good with wiring.

i.e low voltage, bad ground etc

could be any sensor or even coilpack. Low voltage means the unit is failing. You need a code to pin point what is failing.

Not yet I'll have to dig my Haynes manual out first. I called a local motor factor and asked how much a coil pack would be and they said £64 plus VAT. Might have to risk getting a second hand one on ebay...
Does the non-turbo 1.8 take the same coilpacks as the turbo?

Try your local VW dealer, they should be chaeaper than that....

Dealer said £106 total. not sure now whether he mean including VAT, or for all 4...

Something tells me I need to sort out the wiring issue before I get to the bottom of the engine trouble.

I've just looked under the bonnet, got the engine cover off and it doesnt look like my engine has coil packs like the 1.8T Mine is a non-turbo AGN
